PORTAGERS BEAT MCE! The 2004 Golf season opened with all the schools in the Conference assembling at Marquette Trails just south of Baldwin. In West Michigan D, all schools assemble at a given location site four times a season. Two schools will go head to head on the front 9 and two schools on the back 9. Today, OHS discovered from the host school they would be playing against Baldwin on the front 9 and MCE on the back 9 contrary to what the schedule said. Losing to Baldwin by only 7 strokes, the Portagers posted 207 points from the scoring four. Low man was once again Nathan Griswold with 44, Jordan Pomeroy scored 50, Chris Smith ended up with 56 and first year Freshman Josh Cebula posted 57. Also shooting for OHS ,but no factor in the score were Todd Lyman with 60 and Tim Veverica with 66. Each school was allowed to bring only 6 team members with the 4 lowest scores counting towards team standings. Baldwin's final score of 200 came from Matt Cox's 47, Robbins's 48, Jason Curtis's 52 and Mike Devos's 53. This match put OHS's score at 0-1 in Conference standings and 0-1 overall. The Back 9 brought a Portager Victory over MCE! Coach Zadow said the team has been waiting for 5-6 years for this win over them . They accomplished this when the scoring 4 logged in a 188 team effort , with Nathan Griswold once again leading the team with his score of 42. Chris Smith shot 45, Jordan Pomeroy 46 and Todd Lyman 55. Not factoring into the team score, but shooting for Onekama were Tim Veverica with 64 and Josh Cebula with 64. Low man for MCE, Ricky Stepka posted 44, Mike Charles 47, Blaine Reinoehl 48 and Ryan Lilje 52. Final team standings for OHS after the first day of Official matches is now 1-1 in the Conference and 1-1 Overall! The next match is the Gladiator Golf Invitational , 8-19-04 held by Traverse City St. Francis on Spruce Run at the Grand Traverse Resort with a shotgun start at 8:00 AM. |

Jordan waits patiently to tee off as there was slow play ahead of him. |
Nathan, the team and match medalist for both 9 holes, poses with a Marquette Trails Clubhouse Trophy. NO, ...it's not his to keep!, but they had fun! |
Todd takes a much appreciated water break after completing his round. |
As the team members completed course play, they retired to the club house to wait for their team mates to finish. While Chris and Nathan were relaxing in style, their curiosity rose about a trophy that was behind them. |
The coaches from all the schools there today, gathered around a big table in the Clubhouse and tallied the scores. As they did this, Josh sat in a corner deep in thought, wondering if his score of 57 on the front 9 would count towards the team score. (The photo didn't turn out, but his score did count.) Good for you Josh! |
While waiting for the score results, Jordan found the wait to be a nail biting experience! |
