Welcome to: Mr. McKenney’s Academic/Counseling Webpage

MAC-WEB (Volume I, Issue1) November 2004

I can be contacted via e-mail: smckenney@manistee.org or by phone at (231) 889-5521. Our fax number is (231) 889-9567.

Being the new 6-12th grade School Counselor I thought it would be nice to create a new webpage for the Counseling Department at Onekama Consolidated Schools. I will be updating the page every month, and adding to it as the year progresses. This being my first issue, I would to give you background information about myself as well as tell of the format of my webpage.

My Webpage will be separated into four sections with each section having information relevant to that particular group of students, parents, staff and the Onekama community as a whole. I hope you will enjoy the new format and welcome you input as the Webpage grows and develops over the school year.

New School Counselor

My name is Scott McKenney, and I was born and raised in Petoskey, MI where I graduated from Petoskey HS. I attended North Central Michigan College received my Assoc of Arts Degree, transferred to Central Michigan University and Graduated with a BS in Secondary Education. I was a Fulltime substitute/Community Ed teacher 2 yrs at Fulton Public Schools, HS English teacher for Brethren HS from 1984-86. I spent a short time in the US Army. Moved to Grand Rapids, MI where my wife was a Registered Nurse at Blodgett Medical Center and I worked for Knapp & Vogt Manufacturing Comp. In 1989 I returned to Central Michigan University to pursue a counseling degree & was an intern at the Counseling Center at CMU. I graduated in the 1st class of Licensed Professional Counselors from CMU with a 48 Hr Masters of Arts Degree in Professional Counseling, May 1992. I am a Licensed Professional Counselor & a State certified K-12 School Guidance Counselor. I do limited private counseling. I have been a School Counselor for the past 12 years where is spent 2 yrs at Holton Middle School, 2 years at Buckley Community School (I was the 1st School Counselor they had and began the counseling program from the ground up). The past 8 yrs I have been the School Counselor at Mesick Consolidated School, primarily working and teaching at the high school level.

I accepted the School Counseling position at Onekama Consolidated Schools Sept 01, 2004 because I wanted to work in a school district where I would be more connected to most of the students. Onekama allows me to interact with students in grades K through 12 doing many different counseling duties such as career education, crisis counseling, parent meetings, testing & assessment, college applications to graduation with seniors. This gives me the opportunity to work with the entire, Administration, Faculty, Staff, and students at Onekama Consolidated Schools at one time or another. In turn this allows me to work with parents, community organization, and local agencies.

I have been married for 22 years to my wife Cynthia McKenney, who is a Registered Nurse at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac, and an EMT-Specialist for Mesick Rescue Squad. I have 04 sons, Shawn 15 (sophomore), Travis 11 (6th grade), Curtis 10 (4th grade) & Keith 7 (1st grade). They attend Onekama Schools with me and are actively involved in the athletic, and student activities at the school.

From my bio you can tell I have spent most of my life in Northwestern Michigan, close to the Lake. My family & I enjoy church activities, hunting, fishing, camping, canoeing, & skiing, all can be found in the Onekama area and we are excited being a part of the local community. My other hobbies include reading, sports (especially Soccer, Baseball & Football), tie collecting and Star Wars. This is evident when you come into my office at school and see my Star Wars posters on the walls, (other Star Wars items will appear as the new Episode III movie comes out in May 05), and the great variety of ties I wear to school each day. I want my office to be a reflection of me and a warm inviting place for students and adults.
