Onekama Ski Team Competes at Crystal

The Glen Lake boys team remains the dominant force in the Lake Michigan Ski Conference refusing to give up their reign of 1st place. Although the Portager boys finished 3rd overall tonight,they still remain a threat to Glen Lakes reign , finishing 2nd to them in Giant Slalom. Dq's and DNF's played a big role in the final standings tonight among all the teams as well as the Portagers.

Portager Boys team place 2nd in Giant Slalom and 4th in Slalom for a final standing of 3rd overall.

Boys Team Standings for the Night:

Girls Team Standings for the Night:

  • 1st Bellaire 52 points
  • 2nd Manistee 78

  • 5th Onekama 126

Girls GS:

Bellaire's Juliette King won the GS in the girls competition tonight with a combined of :42.91.The Portagers, not far behind Glen Lake placed 5th with 61 points. Kaylie Mathieu raced down with times of :22.70 and :22.12 for 7th place. Stephanie Griffin's times of :23.79 and :23.68 gave her 14th and Dani Olson nailed 19th with :25.52 and :25.00. Monica placed 21st with her runs of :29.52 and :30.01.

Due to exam week , the OHS Ski Team has pulled out of the Cadillac Invitational which is to be held tomorrow 1-20-04 at Caberfae. The next race for the Portagers will be the Flushing Invitational at Crystal Mt. 1-24-04. This will be the first medal meet of the season for them.

Boys GS:

Glen Lake's Alex Wiesen won the boy's GS event tonight. Onekama finished in 2nd place as a team with 47 points. Wiley Heller came in 5th with :20.58 and :20.41 for a combined of :40.99. Eric Baumler raced down with :20.80 and :20.59 for a combined of :41.39 and 7th place. Jackson Carter nailed 9th with runs of :21.38 and :21.11 for his combined of :42.49. Joe Dontz's first run came in at :25.16 and he bettered his second run with :24.79. Chris Smith's first run was :21.36. On his second run he missed a gate and had to do a "U" turn to get it, giving him a time of :29.02 and a combined of :50.38 and 27th place. Travis Berklund also had a hike on his first run and received a time of :43.49. He redeemed himself nicely with a second run of :21.76 and 32nd place.

Boy's Slalom:

The Slalom event brought every team multiple DNF's and DQ's tonight.The Portager boy's went on to place 4th as a team in slalom with 60 points. Glen Lake's Kevin Fisher won the event. Eric Baumler finished 6th for the Portagers with times of :25.77 and :26.87 and a combined of :52.64. Chris Smith took 8th place with :26.46 and :26.32 and his combined of :52.78. Travis Berklund finished 12th with :27.75 and :28.72 and combined of :56.47. Jackson Carter did not finish ,while Wiley Heller had a first run of :35.38 and a DNF his second run. Joe Dontz came in with :32.64 his first run, but also DNF'd his second run.

Girls Slalom:

Bellaire's Emily Rames won the Slalom event for the girls tonight. The Portager Girls finished 5th as a team with Kaylie Mathieu once again pacing the team. Kaylie's runs of :28.93 and :31.23 put her in 9th position for the night in this event. Dani Olson placed 13th with runs of :31.73 and :32.46. Monica Higley placed 21st with :36.31 and :37.84. Stephanie Griffin's first run came in at nice :28.39, but she had a hike on her second run giving her a time of :45.91 and 22nd place.
