February 3, 2004

<-- "Our" Medalists from the Conference Finals held at Schuss Mt. Left to right, front row, Wiley Heller, Christopher Smith, Eric Baumler. Coach Miller, Stephanie Griffin, Kaylie Mathieu, Dani Olson, Coach Mathieu.

Here a some photos from a distance of a few of the team members as they challenged themselves on the longer runs at Schuss in not so nice conditions.

Driving down and forward, just like coach likes it! If any of the racers recognize themselves or others in these photos. please let the webmaster or I know so we can give credit where credit is due!

This is possibly senior Joe Dontz, arms forward and looking for the next gate. Looking good!

Eric Baumler, is this you flying down the hill? I know that Dawn only took photos of our teams. I can identify some of you from your brilliantly colored GS suits. Some of you have almost identical suits though, making it slightly more difficult.

There's no mistaking Chris coming down the course with his yellow and red GS suit and almost fluorescent shin guards!

Christopher, first one on the right, accepted his 10th place medal in Slalom. Eric Baumler (red shirt) accepted his 6th place medal as well in the same event.

Thank you Dawn Johnson for taking photos with my camera tonight! I know you were busy with a few cameras as well as your own. We all appreciate your support of OUR team! Boys Slalom:

The boy's slalom event took it's toll on all of the schools tonight on the adverse course conditions. With all the DNF's and hikes, and rules stating that the course could not be moved over..it was a matter of letting the computer sort it all out for the final standings. From glancing at the first run times, OHS/BLHS/FHS had 4 boys in the top 10, but it takes 2 runs to make a final placing for the event and it was anyone's game at this point. The boys finished 5th as a team in Slalom with 72 points. Eric Baumler led the Portagers with his 6th place finish and conference medal. Christopher Smith placed 10th for a conference medal in this event also. Glen Lake's Terry McGovern won the medal race.

  • 10th Dani Olson
  • 15th Monika Higley
  • 16th Stephanie Griffin

In the Girls Combined, Monika, Stephanie and Benzie's Chelsea all tied for the 14th position as far as point placings for the day. When this happens, to break the tie, the officials then add up the actual times that the racers finished in. This resulted in Benzie's Chelsea with 14th, Monika 15th, and Stephanie 16th for the day.

Boy's Combined:

  • 7th Eric Baumler
  • 10th Chris Smith
  • 20th Wiley Heller
  • 25th Joe Dontz
  • 30th Jackson Carter

In the boy's combined, Christopher tied for 9th in the combined with Glen Lake's Andy Marin at 23 points. The officials went to their times to try and break the tie. With 0.00.08 between the boys, Andy received the 9th place medal and Christopher the 10th place medal.
