Onekama Ski Team Awards Banquet: March 11, 2004

The annual OHS Ski Team awards banquet was held this year at Crystal Mt. on 3-11-04. Families shared photos of the team members, watched ski videos, visited and enjoyed another huge feast which was supplied by each family.

Coach Miller held a short meeting where he discussed next years ski camp possibilities, wrapped up loose ends, and read a letter from Crystal Mt. congratulating the team on their very successful year and the fact that they were proud that we make Crystal Mt. our home Mt.

BrickWheels of Traverse City donated gifts for each team member and they were awarded by a number drawing. Wax, goggles, duct tape (very important item to racers), Swix manuals, hats were some of the items that the team members received.

Earning Honorable Mention in the Traverse City Record Eagle's All State Dream Team are Wiley Heller and Kaylie Mathieu.

Going by a points system throughout race season, Wiley Heller and Kaylie Mathieu earned the coveted MVP team awards for the 2003-2004 season.

Summing up the Night:

All members received their Varsity letter, and or ski pin and Brick Wheels of T.C donated a wax scraper for each of them, as well as these highlights.

*SIGH* This concludes the Ski team's season, or does it? Plans and Dreams and goals are already scampering through the minds and hearts of next years returning team members. Just last year I made a comment that Dale Miller will get the team to State. For once, my prediction was correct! The Boy's team placed second at Regionals and qualified for State as well as 2 of the members from the girls team under his watchful eyes. Now that the team made it to State, they have already raised that 'bar' and set higher goals yet. The plan? Win Regionals next year and make an even better showing at State. Unreachable? Ski Team members are a special 'breed' of their own. They are dedicated to the sport and team, live, breath, and dream about ski team.

Weather, injury, illness does not stop them from racing. They achieved their goals this year. They will achieve their goals next year. They had 6 team members achieve All Region , sent the boys team and 2 girl individuals to State Finals this season. Just imagine what another year older, another year stronger can bring........Gwen Smith
