Onekama Football Team Beats Vestaburg in HomeComing Game

Onekama 27, Vestaburg 6

Our Team marches up to the field. They have a job to do. They must stop Vestaburg cold in their tracks who are currently 5-0. Our boys are healthy and fit and now is the time for some real Portager ball!

With the clouds rolling in threatening rain the Portagers kick to Vestaburg for the start of the 3rd quarter. Once again, our defense held them back and they had to turn the ball over to OHS. Revolt carries, Thomas does a keeper, Revolt carries, Thomas tries another keeper, incomplete pass, pass to Catanese, Revolt two more carries and YES! , Revolt gets a touchdown and Thomas's kick is good for the extra point. Score 21-0 Portagers! The Portagers defense kept knocking them down and back, while the offense kept scoring. The game ended with a score of 27-6 in favor of Onekama. THE BOYS ARE BACK! Go Portagers!

Vestaburg kicked to OHS for the kick off, but we were unable to secure a score having to turn the ball over. # 65 Jon Sievert recovered a Vestaburg fumble however, getting the ball back and allowing the Portagers to score first as well as get the extra point. The cheerleaders surprised the crowd by throwing small footballs to the fans that were signed by the team members after each touchdown! The score stood 7-0 Portagers in the first quarter.

The 2nd quarter brought lots of excitement for the fans and team. # 22 Tom Gillespie gained a lot of yardage and #11 Dustin Thomas ran in a 2nd touchdown with a quarter back keeper as well as his kick was good for the extra point.

Vestaburg turned the ball over yet again as our defense was holding them back pretty darn good! Dustin Thomas ran the ball down to about the 30 yard line with another quarter back keeper. After a few attempts by Revolt to get a score, the Portagers turn the ball back over to Vestaburg.

Their ball carrier was brought down by Jon Sievert and the Portagers recover the Vestaburg fumble near their goal line with 54 seconds left in the second quarter. OHS makes a few more drives gaining yardage with the score being 14-0 Portagers at the half.

# 50 Brett Cronkhite and # 54 Chris Smith execute pre-game drills as the rest of the linemen wait for their cue from Coach Taylor to execute theirs. These linemen were PUMPED!

# 62 Senior Mike Fredricks spars with # 54 Smith in pregame warm ups. Both said they were "laying it all out there today".

Mrs. Cress Smith directed the OHS Marching Band in the National Anthem, Portager War Chant (the fan's favorite) and a wide array of pep music. The band was in perfect form today from head to toe to music! Not an out of place squeak or off key sound was heard! They had the fans stomping their feet to the beat yet again. There is going to be some pretty shaky home video of this game as the Portager fans shook the stands to the beat as the Marching Band played!

The OHS Marching Band led the parade through town from the park and up the hill to the school playing our Fight Song.

"We got spirit yes we do! We got spirit, HOW 'BOUT YOU?! " The football players' moms got in the parade action too!

# 20 Senior John Revolt runs through the "chute" as player introductions were announced. Parents, cheerleaders, and fans making up the chute lined up almost completely across the width of the field to cheer the players on.

# 54 Chris Smith runs through the chute onto the field "growling" the entire way and shouting " Let's play PORTAGER Ball!!!!" As each team member ran through, you knew they meant business!

Student Ms. Reckow conducts the Marching Band in the halftime festivities as Band Director Cress Smith cues subtly from the side.

2003 Homecoming King Dustin Vandervest and 2003 Queen Amy Eipperle pose for the many photos that were being taken of them after the announcements were read.
