Varsity and JV Basketball season started on the road on Tuesday night 9/02/03. The Varsity came away with a victory by the score of 55 to 19. Mary Bradford had 17 points followed by Bonnie Harthun with 10 points

Frankfort 28 - OHS 24

The Lady Portagers lost a very close game to Frankfort by the score 55 to 60 the score was OHS 24 & Frankfort 28 at the half Leading the Portagers in Scoring was Mary Bradford with 20 points and Bonnie Harthun added 17 & Renee Pienta tossed in 11 points
9/9 Pentwater - Home

OHS 53 to Pentwater 33

In the varsity game the Lady Portagers beat the Pentwater Falcons by a score 53 to 33 to raise there record to 2 and 1 for the young season. Leading the way was Mary Bradford with 16, Bonnie Harthun chipped in with 15, Erica Jach had 9, Amy Eipperle added 6, Renee Pienta 3 and Jade Bolthouse and Sarah Acker each had 2 points. OHS 50 to MCE 33

The Varsity Lady Portagers hosted the undefeated MCE Cardinals who came to OHS with a 4-0 record But the Lady Portagers flew out to a 20 -14 lead at halftime and never looked back as they handed the Cardinals there first lost of the season by a score of 50 to 33 and saw there own record improve to 3-1 on the season and 3-0 in the conference Leading the Lady Portagers was Marylnn Bradford with 20 followed by Bonnie Harthun 16 points and Renee Pienta & Erica Jach tossed in 5 each and Amy Eipperle sank 4 points for the Lady Portagers .
9/18 Walkerville. -Away

Walkerville 49 - OHS 34

On the 9/18/03 the GIRLS Varsity Basketball team traveled to Walkerville to play the Walkerville Wildcats in a conference game as both teams were undefeated in Conference play. At halftime the Wildcats led by two points by a score of 21 to 23. In the second half the Lady Wildcats pulled away from our Lady Portagers to win by a score of 34 to 49 and OHS saw its season record drop to 3-2 and 3-1 in Conference play. Leading the Ladies was Mary Bradford with 11, Bonnie Harthun added 10, Erica Jach & Erica Reckow chipped in with 4 points each and Renee Pienta had 3 and Amy Epperle 2 points.
9/23 Brethren @Home

Brethren 44 - OHS 40

On Tuesday 9/23/03 the Lady Portagers were at home against the Brethren Bobcats and in a close game the Portagers lost by 4 points to Brethren by a score of 40 to 44 and dropped their season record to 3-3 and Conference to 3-2. Bonnie Harthun tossed up 11 pts, Mary Bradford added 8, Erica Jach & Amy Eippperle hit for 7 each, Renee Pienta 5 and Erica Reckow 2.
9/25 BearLake - Away

OHS 58 to BearLake 43

On Thursday 9/25/03 the Lady Portagers Traveled to Bear Lake to take on the Lakers in a Conference gamm. It was Parents night for the Bear Lake/ OHS/ MCC Cross Country Team as players and Parents were introduced and each runner gave there parents a Flower and Candy Bar. The Portagers came away with a 58 to 43 Victory to see their season record go to 4-3 and in Conference to 4-2 Leading the Scoring was Mary Bradford with 16, Bonnie Harthun 15, Erica Jach 13 and Renee Pienta 12.
9/30 Freesoil - Home

OHS 70 to Freesoil 27

In the Varsity contest, the Lady Portagers defeated the Freesoil Pirates at home by a score of 70 to 27 to improve their conference record to 5-2 and their season record to 5-3. Eric Jach lead the Lady Portagers in scoring with 12, Mary Bradford tossed up 11, Jade Bolthouse & Eric Reckow each added 9 point and Sarah Acker & amy Eipperele had 7 point each. Bonnie Harthun tossed in 6, Renee Pienta 5, and Stephanie Carlson 2, as everybody got to score a bucket tonight.
10/2 Frankfort -Away

OHS lost

OnThursday 10/02/03the Lady Portagers traveled to Frankfort to take on the Panthers in a game in which Frankfort jumped out to a 14-0 lead. The Portagers battled back to tie it all up at 27 apiece early in the second half. Then with about 3 minutes to go, the Portagers got within one point of the Panthers 52-51, but couldn't quite pull the game out. It was a very physical game . Leading the way for the Portagers was Mary Bradford with 14, Amy Eipperle tossed in 12, Bonnie Harthun hit for 8, Stephanie Carlson, Eric Jach and Renee Pienta each added 6 points, and Eric Reckow had 2 points. The Portagers season record dropped to 5-4 and conference record is still 4-2.
10/7 Baldwin - Home

OHS won by a score of 51 to 41

The Lady Portagers won by a score of 51 to 41. The game was a lot closer at different stages of the 2nd half as Baldwin would make some runs to get close and then the Lady Portagers would open the gap back up . Leading the scoring attack for thePortagers was Bonnie Harthun with 17points Mary Bradford tossed in 16, Amy Eipperle chipped in with 6, Renee Pienta added 5 and Erica Reckow and Stephanie Carlson had 2 each as their season record went to 6-4 and their Conference record to 6-2
10/14 Pentwater - Away

OHS 57 to Pentwater 35

The Varsity Girls played a good defense game and came away with a 57 to 35 victory over the Falcons to see their season record go to 7-4 and 7- 2 in the conference as they lead all the way. Pacing the Young Lady Portagers was Mary Lynn Bradford & Erica Jach who burned the nets for 17 points each and a trio of Portagers had 6 points each Erica Reckow, Sarah Acker and Bonnie Harthun. Their next game is Thursday 10/16/03 at Buckley in a non-conference game but the Bears will be in the same district play as the Portagers next month at Frankfort.
10/16 Buckley wins 35 to 36 -Away On Thursday 10/16/03 the Varsity Lady Portagers traveled to Buckley to take on the Bears in a low scoring contest at the half the Portagers were behind by one 15 to 16 and Bonnie Harthun hit a free throw with about 20 seconds left to send the game into overtime where the portagers looked like they would pull a victory out with a few seconds left in overtime the ladies were up by two points only to see the Bears hit a three pointer as the clock was ticking off the final seconds to lose by a score of 35 to 36. to see there season record drop to 7-5 as this was a non-conference game.

10/21 MCE - Away

Onekama wins 46 to 38

On Tuesday 10/21/03 the Lady Portagers traveled to MCE to take on the Cardinals in a conference game and came away with a 46 to 38 victory and saw their season record go to 8-5 and conference record to 8-2 way they now take on league leading Walkerville on Thursday at home. Leading the Lady portagers against Custer was Erica Jach with 13 points, Renee Pienta tossed in 10 points, Mary Bradford & Amy Eipperle each chipped in with 7 points each, Bonnie Harthun hit for 6 and Erica Reckow had 3 points for the Lady Portagers as the season is going into the home stretch with District play to begin the week of November 17 at Frankfort with Onekama, Buckley, MCC, Bear Lake and host Frankfort in the tournament.
10/23 Walkerville wins 53 to 37 at Onekama On the 10/23/03 The league leading Walkerville Wildcats came to Onekama to take on our Lady Portagers. The first half was close as Wildcatsled at halftime by a score of 34 to 25 but in the 2nd half the Wildcats pulled away with a 53 to 37 Victory over our Ladies, Leading the scoring was Mary Bradford who had 14 points, Erica Jach added 11, Amy Eipperle chipped in with 6, Erica Reckow netted 5 points, and Stephanie Carlson had 1. As their conference record fell to 8-3 and their season record is now 8-6.
10/28 Brethren wins 46 to 29 - Away On 10/28/03 our Lady Portagers traveled over to county Rival Brethren in another conference game, In this contest the Portagers were down only 2 points at halftime by a score of 16-18 but again in the 2nd half the Bobcats pulled away to defeat our Portagers by a score of 46 to 29. as Lady Portagers conference record now is 8-4 and their season record is 8-7 Leading the Portagers tonight were Erica Jach with 13, Mary Bradford netted 9 , Amy Eipperle added 5, and Sarah Acker 2 points

Onekama wins 48 to 32

On 10/30/03 The Bear Lake Lakers came to Onekama on Devils night and were soundly defeated by our Lady Portagers by a score of 48 to 32 as the Lady Portagers Improved there conference record to 9-4 and there season record to 9-7 Leading the scores tonight was Mary Bradford who swished in 17 points, Bonnie Harthun & Erica Jach each tossed in 10 points, Renee Pienta added 6, Amy Eippperle & Sarah Acker had 2 each and Jade Bolthouse had 1 to close out the scoring for the Portagers.
11/04 Freesoil -Away

Onekama wins 56 to 19

On 11/04/03 the Portagers traveled to Freesoil to take on the Pirates and the Lady Portagers continue there winning ways tonight with a 56 to 19 win over Freesoil improving their conference record to 10-4 and their season record to 10-7 Leading the Portagers tonight was Bonnie Harthun who burned the nets with 15 points Erica Jach netted 13, Mary Bradford added 8, Renee Pienta 6, & Jade Bolthouse,Sarah Acker, Amy Eipperle all had 4 each,Erica Reckow had 2 points as all the Lady Portagers scored tonight.
11/6 Mesick beats Onekama 39 to 44 at Home On 11/06/03 the Mesick Bulldogs came to Onekama in a non conference game at the half the Bulldogs led by a score of 19 to 11 but our Lady Portagers wouldn't give up and at the end of regulations play the game was tied up but in the overtime the Bulldogs defeated our Lady Portagers by a score of 39 to 44 as OHS record dropped to 10- 8 for the season Leading the Portagers in a good basketball game was Mary Bradford as she burned the nets for 17 points ,Bonnie Harthun added 8, Renee Pienta netted 6, and Erica Jach & Amy Eipperle each had 4 apiece.
11/11 Buckley beats Onekama 52 to 42 at Home The Lady Portagers hosted the Buckley Bears at home in their last home game of the season and also Parents night for the players. Playing in their last home game were Seniors Erica Reckow, Amy Eipperle & Renee Pienta. In a game that was very close, OHS lost to Buckley in overtime early in the season. tonight they came up just a little short as Buckley defeated the Lady Portagers by a score of 52 to 42, but the game it self was much closer then the final score as Onekama led at halftime by 2 points but fell short in the very end of the game as there season record dropped to 10-9 and there conference record ended up at 10-4.
11/13 Kingsley - Away The Lady Portagers traveled to Kingsley to take on the Lady Stags but the Our Lady Portagers fell short in this contest to end the season with a even 10 win and 10 loss season.
The Lady Portagers will next see action in District play at Frankfort on Wednesday evening 11/19/03 at 6:00 p.m. when they will take on their arch rivals the Bear Lake Lakers who they have defeated twice during the regular season. Other teams in the district are Frankfort & Buckley who play each other on Monday night. Then the winner takes on MCC after the Portagers game on Wednesday night and the two winners on Wednesday night play for the district crown on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. at Frankfort.
11/19 District Tourney at Frankfort vs Bear Lake Lakers

The girls won.

The Onekama girls beat Bear Lake in the first game of the District Tournament. Frankfort beat Manistee Catholic. According to the coach, Renee Pienta played a great floor game distributing the ball, and as a team, the passing and patience to get a good shot for their teammates was outstanding.  Defensively, Onekama continued to play 'ferocious' defense. 11/21 District Tourney at Frankfort vs Frankfort

Awards

The girls lost to Frankfort 22 - 56. Onekama Lady Portagers traveled up the road to Frankfort to play the Lady Panthers for the district crown The Lady Panthers got off to a quick start and never really looked back as they led the Portagers by a score of 15 to 7 at the end of the 1st quarter and it was 29 to 10 at half time. It was 42 to 16 going into the final quarter and the final score was 56 to 22. Frankfort was crowned class D district champs with a 21 and 2 record and will play Walkerville Monday night at Manistee High School gym while the Lady Portagers closed out the season with a 11 and 11 season record.

Leading the Lady Portagers in scoring was Senior Renee Pienta with 9 points, Mary Bradford netted 5, and Senior Amy Eipperle, Senior Erica Reckow, Erica Jach, and Bonnie Harthun all added 2 points apiece as their season came to an end. Congratulations on a good season and getting to the District Finals. Farewell to the three Seniors Erica Reckow, Amy Eipperle and Renee Pienta.
