Onekama's Band Participated in the West Michigan D League 2nd Annual Mass Band
November 12, 2003

Directed by Mr. David Buckley

Mass Band
Ashley Dalke

What I enjoyed most about the D League Honors Band was the different people I got to meet. Because we were placed between students of different schools we had the option of interacting with them, not only playing, but socializing. I know I made a few friends as I was there. The other part of the mass band that I liked was the amount of people that participated and the sound we produced: a much larger band sounds stronger and fuller than our tiny little band. Plus I got to see some awesome looking instruments such as the kid next to me , Scott, who had a sax that was silver with gold keys as opposed to gold with silver keys. His brother had a cool tener sax that was black with gold. I wish I had one, or even both. Either way, I had fun.

A Great Experience
Erica Reckow

It was really a great experience especially when we performed as an ensemble that included more people than any one of us had ever performed with. It also introduced me to people I had recently competed against in sports but had never actually gotten to know. The conductor was very enthusiastic. This helped everyone stay motivated during the long rehersals. Altogether it was a great experience.

Band Conference

I enjoyed many things about the band conference. I thought it was exciting meeting the new people. I learned about the different things the schools do opposite or different than us. It was a great experience playing with a bigger band--especially with more than one flute. The conductor was nice. He was also helpful. It was weird playing with people we usually compete against in sports. The songs were cool. I liked how the conductor added the Grand Pause.

Mass Band Experience
Tim V.

My experience yesterday was a good one. I especially enjoyed the concert. I really liked the fact that I could sit next to people who played at or a little above my level. I thought that all the practice was a really good idea. The only down side to all the instruments playing was the sore , bloody lips! I especially enjoyed the idea that all the bands in the area got to practice and play together. And by far, the best part would be the way we sounded. Without mass band, I would probably never be in a 120 piece band.

Mass Band
Emily Bowman

The mass band day was really cool. I really liked playing with four other French horns. I also liked having the day off from school. That was great. Playing with other schools is a great way to get to know other schools better without competing against them , as we do in sports. I did like the music, but I wish we didn't have to play the marches. I think it would be really cool if we could to The Lord of the Rings type theme for next year. That'd be awesome. I also liked the food . It was pretty good. Over all, this mass band was a success.
