Onekama hosted Conference Race # 2, which was held tonight with all the schools in the conference going head to head again. Tonight's match up found Glen Lake Boys fall from their pedestal as last week's number one team having to settle for 3rd place. Glen Lake Girls held onto their reign of first place by a slim margin.

Parent Volunteer, Mrs. Mathieu (Kaylie's mom) watches the next racer on the Slalom course as she waits to record the time for that racer. Meanwhile Mr. Meoak (Tom's dad) is busy recording a time for a racer who just finished their run on the GS course. Mrs. Jach (Erica's mom) and Mrs. Lutz (Jared's mom) helped to record scores as well ,and later Erica's mom was "promoted" to gate keeper when Tom became injured, Mrs. Smith (Chris's mom) relieved Mr. Meoak so he could assist his son. Later in the race, Mrs. Harris (Alex's mom) pitched in recording scores and adding for combined times. Come volunteer at the next race as many positions are available and need filled to keep the race going. We can teach you the "scoreboard shuffle" too! This is where mid way through the race you find yourself rocking back and forth in place, shuffling your feet , and blowing on your frozen fingers as you try to hold and write with a marker.

Girls Slalom:

The Onekama Girls Team placed 4th in Slalom with 50 points taking the 11th, 12th, 13th, 14th, 18th and 22nd placings tonight. There were 34 girls racing in this event. Kaylie Mathieu's runs of 32:25 and 33:39 gave her the fastest OHS girls team time for the evening in slalom for 11th place.

There was only 0:08 difference between Kaylie and Manistee's Danielle Schubert who placed 10th. Frankfort's Stephanie Griffin racing for OHS placed 12th with her times of 33:42 and 34:18. Kelli Hopwood finished with 33:54 and 34:61 for 13th place. Erika Jach is back! Her times of 33:67 and 35:31 put her in the 14th spot. Charlette Kalbach of Frankfort racing for OHS placed 18th with times of 36:57 and 37:61 and Dani Olson snared the 22nd position with 39:99 and 40:62. The OHS Girls Team was the ONLY girls team not suffering a DNF or DQ tonight in Slalom!

Girls Giant Slalom:

The girls placed 5th in GS tonight with Kaylie Mathieu coming in 12th with her times of 21:42 and 21:62 and Kelli Hopwood 16th with a first run of 22:52 and a second run of 21:89. Erika Jach slid into 18th place with 22:22 and 22:31 and Frankforts' Stephanie Griffen for OHS 19th with 22:43 and 22:94.

Charlette Kalbach finished 26th with her times of 25:17 and 24:73 and Dani Olson took 27th with times of 26:37 and 26:62. The GS course was a little kinder to the girl teams tonight with only Manistee and Bellaire suffering DNF's.

Racing as an individual tonight was Frankfort's Amanda Redder coming in with times of 41:55 and 44:25 for 25th place in slalom. Amanda is steadily improving her race skills.

Boys Giant Slalom:

The boys placed 5th tonight in GS after suffering a couple of DNF's. Jackson Carter was the fastest Portager boy in GS tonight pulling out times of 20:15 and 19:85 for 11th place. Christopher Smith is starting to put it back together again and slid into 12th place right behind Jackson with 20:33 and 20:70. Travis Berklund raced down for 15th place with times of 20:80 and 21:10, while Alex Harris of Bear Lake racing for OHS came in 17th with his times of 22:07 and 23:06. Frankfort's Garry Honeycutt's first run came in at 25:35, but he DQ'd on his second run bringing in a no score. Tom Meoak had a very bad fall on his first run giving him a DNF and sending him to the hospital for xrays. Manistee was the only Boy's team not suffering a DNF.

Boys Slalom:

The boys went on to finish 5th in Slalom with only 3 members scoring for the Portagers. Christopher Smith proved to be the fastest Portager Boys racer in Slalom tonight, placing 6th place with times of 28:87 and 29:20. Jackson Carter had a slip up near the bottom of the course giving him a first run of 41.10 , but he redeemed that nicely with a second run of 29.19 placing him 15th. Garry Honeycutt placed 21st with his times of 38:65 and 39:73. Alex Harris and Travis Berklund both DNF'd on their first runs and of course Tom Meoak was at the hospital so he DNS'd (did not start). There were 31 boys in this race. Benzie and Manistee were the only boys teams that did not suffer a DNF tonight in slalom.

Ben LaDuke, Captain and MVP of last year's boys team made a surprise visit at tonight's race. Ben stayed for the race and helped out anyway he could from reviewing the courses with the boys to running for times that couldn't be heard by the announcer due to loud bell ringing. With my fingers too frozen to barely write the scores, I was not able to snap a picture of Ben proudly helping with the race. Ben has a way of calming souls and that he did! Ben is currently racing for Grand Valley State University which is having a race this weekend at Crystal Mt. Stop by and cheer him on!

Monday, Jan. 20th all schools will meet again at Crystal Mt at 5pm. On Tuesday Jan 21st the Portagers head off to Caberfae for their first medal race of the season at the Cadillac Invitational.

Mrs. Hopwood (Kelli's mom) and a parent from another school, swing around to watch and make sure that the racer on the GS course doesnot miss a gate. Mr. Harris (Alex's dad) was up by the start shack lining up racers.Gate keeping is a very important job as you are actually officiating the race. It is your job to instruct the racer who falls or misses a gate what gate to hike back to and when they can "go" again or if they are DQ'd. Special hand signals are learned as well as what is considered a DQ or missed gate. Training is free and Coach Miller is willing to train any and all for the job!

*Note* In a phone conversation with Tom Meoak later in the evening from his home ,he reports that he will be off of his skis for at least the next week. Hyper extending his knee,he has suffered pulled ligaments and tendons in his knee as well as scrapes and bruises on his body, but no "severe or permanent damage".

From my understanding, there won't be any 2 schools going at it on the Mountain on a given night as was done in the past. Each race will pit all the schools in the conference against each other through out the normal race season. And so the story goes........ Reporter/Photographer: Gwen Smith
