Flushing Invitational: January 25, 2003

Earning medals in todays race are , from left to right, Wiley Heller, Jackson Carter, Christopher Smith, Kaylie Mathieu, Stephanie Griffen, and Kellie Hopwood. Standing behind Chris and Kaylie is Coach Mathieu.

The weather was pretty much the same scenario as last years Flushing Invitational. Snow and lots of it coming down! One thing was different this year though. The Portagers brought home some hardware from this years race! The talent of the kids being fine tuned by Coach Miller and Assistant Coach Mathieu is finally paying off with 6 of the team members bringing home medals.

Boys Slalom:

The Portager Boys placed 3rd in Slalom with 55 points. Wiley Heller finished with a 4th Place medal with his times of 27:02 and 25:06. Christopher Smith grabbed the 6th place medal with times of 28:21 and bettering that with 25:93. Alex Harris came in 19th with 32:82 first run and 30:30 his second run. Travis Berklund had a little bit of trouble on his first run giving him 46:99, but he bettered that on his second run with 31:53 placing him 26th. Jackson Carter ejected from his skis at the start gate giving him a DQ and Garry Honeycutt also DQ'd at the top of the hill. The Slalom course claimed 8 racers total for all the boys teams today.

Boys GS:

The boys placed 2nd with 38 points in Giant Slalom. Wiley Heller snatched the 4th place medal with his times of 20:33 and 20:44. Jackson Carter earned the 9th place medal with runs of 21:43 and 21:54. With just 00:25 between them, Christopher grabbed up the 10th place medal right behind Jackson with his times of 21:82 and 21:40. Travis Berklund slid into 15th place with 21:52 and 23:83. Alex Harris did a nice job with his times of 23:66 and 24:96 for 23rd. Garry Honeycutt placed 27th with 25:15 and 27:16. Onekama and Benzie were the only teams not suffering a DQ or DNF.

Bob Smith hands his brother Chris his "goodluck" squirrel in a surprise visit at today's race. Bob was captain of the Portager boys team and raced on the team during 1995-1999. (the squirrel still holds it's good luck charm)

Girls Slalom:

The Girls Team finished 3rd in Slalom today with 40 points. Kaylie Mathieu was the fastest OHS girls team racer in slalom today with her times of 27:94 and 30:30. This gave Kaylie the 3rd place medal. Stephanie Griffen also medaled today in slalom with 29:56 and 35:12 for 8th place. Kelli Hopwood raced down for 12th place with her times of 30:79 and 35:67. Charlette Kalbach finished 17th with 35:63 and 40:75. Erica Jach's first run gave her 32:42, but the course claimed her giving her a DQ on her second run.

Girls GS:

The Portager girls went on to place 5th in GS with 65 points. Grabbing up more medals, Kaylie Mathieu raced down for 2nd place with her times of 21:76 and 22:12 and Kelli Hopwood snatched up 8th place with 22:88 and 23:89. Charlette Kalbach swooshed down for 18th place with a first run of 27:55 and a second run of 27:21. Erica Jach's first run was a nice 22:59, but yet again the course claimed her giving her a DQ on her second run. Stephanie Griffen had the misfortune of DQ'ing on her first run taking her out of contention in GS. It should be noted that the girls team raced today short one racer. JOB WELL DONE!
