Schuss Mountain ! 2-5-03

Medalists from the final conference race held at Schuss Mt. on 2-5-03, Kaylie Mathieu, Wiley Heller, Erica Jach.

Wiley Heller (second from the left), listens on stage with other medalists as the last few medal winners are announced. Wiley tied with another racer, placing 5.5 place in slalom and also received the 9th place medal in the combined. Congratulations Wiley!

Girls Slalom:

Glen Lake's Tanelle Budd won the girls slalom event today with her combined time of 1:14.83. The Portager girls placed 4th in slalom with 55 points. Erica Jach led the team tonight in slalom with her times of 41:82 and 42:84 for a combined time of 1:24.66 and the 10th place medal. Kaylie Mathieu was right behind her finishing 11th with 41:87 and 43:14 for her combined of 1:25.01. Kelli Hopwood placed 16th with 43:22 and 44:56 for 1:27.78 and Stephanie Griffin 18th, 44:75 and 43:61 for a combined of 1:28.36. Charlette Kalbach finished 23rd with her times of 48:22 and 48:24 for 1:36.46 and Dani Olson took 24th with a combined of 1:39.43 for runs of 49:19 and 50:24.

Girls Giant Slalom:

Glen Lake's Tanelle Budd also won the GS event today with 1:01.24. The Portagers placed 4th in the event with 50 points giving them 4th overall for the day. Kaylie Mathieu grabbed the 5th place medal with her times of 31:68 and 31:83 for a combined time of 1:03.51. Just 0:26 out of the medals, Kelli Hopwood finished 12th with her times of 32:35 and 32:52 for 1:04.87. Stephanie Griffen placed 16th with 33:57 and 33:08 for a combined of 1:06.65 and Erica Jach 17th with her times of 33:26 and 33:50 for a combined of 1:06.76. Dani Olson finished 24th with her time of 1:13.18 with runs of 36:86 and 36:32,while Charlette Kalbach came in 25th with 37:02 and 38:15 for 1:15.17.

Girls Combined:

Kaylie Mathieu won the 9th place medal for her 11th and 9th place finishes. Erica Jach placed 12th, Kelli Hopwood 14th, Stephanie Griffin 15th, Charlette Kalbach 24th , Dani Olson 25th and Amanda Redder 29th.

Boys Giant Slalom:

Glen Lake's Alex Wiesen won the boys GS race . OHS placed 5th with 57 points. Jackson Carter led the portagers with runs of 31:09 and 31:21 for a combined of 1:02.30 for 12th place. Wiley Heller came in 13th with 31:09 and 31:35 his combined of 1:02.44 and Alex Harris placed 15th with 32:64 and 33:20 for 1:05.84. Chris Smith placed 17th with 32:23 and 33:98 for 1:06.21 and Garry Honeycutt 32nd with 35:34 and 44:22 for 1:19.56 after a hike on his second run. Senior Tom Meoak is still out with a knee injury.

Boys Slalom:

Suttons Bay's Terry Mcgovern won the race with 1:10.51. The Portager boys suffered a couple of DQ's in slalom placing them 6th with 90.5 points and giving them 6th overall for todays race. Pacing the team was Wiley Heller with his medal and tie with Suttons Bay's Matt Klein, for 5.5 place and a combined time of 1:15.54.Wiley's runs broke down like this, 37:46 and 38:08 respectively. Chris Smith placed 21st with his effort of 41:23 and 50.27 for a combined of 1:31.50 after a hike on his second run. Garry Honeycutt finished 29th with 49.81 and 53.55 for 1:43.36. Jackson Carters first run clocked at :40.53, but he DQ'd on his second run. Alex Harris also DQ'd.

Boy's Combined:

In the Combined competition Wiley Heller won the 9th place medal for his 5.5 and 13th places. Chris Smith placed 17th, Jackson Carter 26th, Alex Harris 27th, and Garry Honeycutt 34th.

Erica Jach (on the right) pleased and "shocked" about her medal at the Conference Finals held at Schuss Mt. We had been seeing some super runs out of Erica all season, only to have something happen on her second run.Today, it finally all came together for her! Congratulations! Erica!

Regionals will be held at Crystal Mt. on 2-13-03
