Dear Parents,

Today we walked to the Onekama Public Library.  Each student was able to check out three books.  On Tuesday, October 15th we’ll walk to the library and return these books for more books.  We’ll walk to and from the library every three weeks throughout the school year.

This week we completed our NWEA testing, but there was an issue with the sound on Tuesday.  We completed the reading on Wednesday and the math on Thursday.  Your child’s results will be available for your review during parent-teacher conferences in October.

In this week’s Friday Folder, some of your child’s work was graded with letter grades.  There are four grades given, they are S+=Achieved, S=Progressing Successfully, S-=Beginning to Develop and U=Experiencing Difficulty. Some papers are stamped with “The Wall of Fame.”  These papers are the best of the best, because they have included correct answers, best writing, best coloring, no backward letters or numbers and the date.  If your child has this stamped on one of his/her papers, then congratulate him/her on a job well done.

On October 1st, we began to participate in the Book-It! Program.  For those unfamiliar with the Book It! Program, it is a national reading incentive program for grades K – 6 sponsored by Pizza Hut.  Your child has a monthly goal of 5 books.  Once the goal is reached, your child will receive a Free Pizza Award Certificate, which entitles him/her to a one-topping personal pan pizza.  On the first visit, your child will receive a Book It! Passport to Reading and sticker to track their reading progress throughout the program months.  On each subsequent visit, the child will be given another personal pan pizza and sticker to add to their passport.  Book It! will end on March 31, 2014.  This program requires nothing additional to what you have already been doing; I will send home books and have your child read them to you.

Attached you will find a copy of my wish list.  As you know our school budget is becoming less and less each year.  When I first began teaching, we were given a $1000 budget for each classroom.  Now we were given $150 to purchase our supplies.  Of course you are not obligated to purchase, but several parents have requested a list.   The wish list includes craft supplies for our two holiday parties and other necessary items.  If you would like to help, then it would be greatly appreciated.
