Dear Parents,

Last Tuesday we walked to the Onekama Public Library.  Our books are due on Tuesday, November 5th.  Each library visit I will drop off any books returned to me before our next visit.  If you return your child’s books to me on the day of our visit (November 5th), then s/he will need to carry them back to the library.  As always you may return your child books on or before the due date to any Manistee Public Library branch: Arcadia, Bear Lake, Kaleva, Onekama, Wellston and Manistee.

Next week is parent-teacher conferences on Tuesday, October 22nd and Wednesday, October 23rd from 5-8 pm.  On Wednesday, students are dismissed at 12:30 pm.  Staff has professional development in the afternoon.  If you have not made your appointment yet, please contact the student services office at

889-9674.  Please be aware that you will not receive your child’s report card at this conference.  You will receive assessment information and ask questions about our curriculum and your child’s progress.  The first quarter is finished on November 1st and then your child’s report card will be sent home in Friday folders the following week.  On Thursday, October 24th I’ll attend our monthly child study meeting.  It was originally scheduled for today, but it needed to be rescheduled.

Our Halloween party is Thursday, October 31st at 12:30 to 3:00 p.m.  Your child is able to come to school with his/her costume on and wear it all day.  If your child has a weapon as part of his/her costume, it needs to stay at home.  The following people have volunteered to be classroom helpers: Carolyn Bradford, Tess Fink, Bridget Grossnickle, Kristin Howes, Samantha Niesen, Katie Rackow and Susan Zielinski.  You will be in charge of an art project so please come to the room at 12:00 p.m. for instructions Amber Clouse, Tess Fink, Phyllis Pate, Katie Rackow and Lisa Sidor are providing snacks.  For those providing snacks, please let me know ahead of time so we don’t duplicate snacks.  I would like to have a mixture of sweets and healthy snacks.  Martha Chavez-Trejo, Eugenia Jaregui and Theresa Porter are providing drinks.  Susan Zielinski is providing plates and cups.  Please note that we no longer have a costume parade throughout the school.  I have received several wish list items for the party, but we are still in need of green food coloring (2), white crape paper (3), large (1 ½” – 2”) black pom-poms (26) and craft glue (2).

Our Michigan weather is unpredictable as we change from fall to winter.  Please be sure your child is dressed appropriately.  Students should have a coat, jacket or sweatshirt everyday.  Once our winter weather is upon us, your child will need a winter coat, hat, gloves, snow pants, snow boots, and a pair of inside shoes.  During the winter months students should come to school in their snow boots and switch to their inside shoes at school.  Once it is time for recess students will change from inside shoes to snow boots and of course the same will happen at last recess.  This process avoids us from sitting on wet and dirty carpet, but I’ve noticed that several students are unable to tie their shoes so this process will be very difficult for them.  Please spend some time with your child over the next several weeks before the wintry weather begins. This skill will not be taught at school.
