Uninvited Guests
By Cyerah, grade 5
His heart was pounding. He was sure he had seen
the doorknob turn on his way out of the basement. He
said to himself, “First it was the doorknob. Now it is
things disappearing.”
The town was dead silent like no one was around on Eery
St. Danny was wondering what was going on and how come
no one was around. All of a sudden he thought he had
seen a white figure that looked like himself and he had
a vision of that white figure in a house fire.
Mrs. and Mr. Maying came over and Danny had forgotten
that they were coming over at 4 o’ clock to have dinner
with him. When they went inside to sit in the dining
room, Danny was getting ready to make dinner. Then, all
of a sudden, he saw that white figure again. He froze
and the Mayings asked, “Are you alright Danny?” He
didn’t reply. Danny had swaorn he had heard the figure
say, “You will be there soon.”
Danny did not know what the white figure meant by, “You
will be there soon.” Danny finally had dinner all ready
for the Mayings. They were having Chop-sewy for dinner.
Danney said, “Did you guys see that white figure over by
the oven? And did you hear it say, ‘You will be there
soon’ to me?”
The Mayings said no and they told Danny there was no
figure. Then, the stove started to burn all of a sudden!
And the curtain by the oven caught on fire! Then, Danny
started to disappear!
Danny said, “What is happening to me? I am not a ghost!”
Then the figure showed up again and said, “I told you,
you will be there soon.”
The Mayings escaped from the fire and ran back home.
They called the fire department and said, “We have a
fire on a curtain!” The fire chief said that they would
be at the house soon. When they showed up, they put out
the fire.
Danny Prescott was never heard from again.
The House On Maple
Street
By Leslie, grade 5
The family was searching for a house to live. The
family saw a man in the store. The man asked if they
were searching for a house because he had an extra
house. Then the family said, “Yes yes!”
Then they went to the place that they used to live near
the trash. When they got there, the house was big and
old. They were so excited about the new house. There
names were Amy, Cleo, DJ, and Jackob. Now, each of them
had their own room.
The people that left them there were already gone.
Anyone that walked there didn’t get near that house,
because they knew that house was haunted.
The family was looking at the the front of the house. No
one was there. The family was wondering why no one was
walking there. They went outside. The people that saw
the family ran away because they live there.
Amy walked to a girl that was on the other side of the
road. She was just standing there. She asked her, “Why
didn’t you go running like those kids?”
“They thought you were ghosts, because that house is
haunted, that’s why! This house is haunted!” the girl
said loudly.
The family heard that. They called the man and told him
that they didn’t need the house!
The Haunted School
Eliaylia, grade 5
There was a school named Cass Gated Elementary school.
The school was over two million years old. It was so old
fashion the legend has it people saw ghosts floating
around the library. Last year a girl named Moriah saw a
ghost floating by the water fountain. The ghost said go
down stairs there is a surprise down stairs in the
basement. Moriah turned and screamed all the to the
classroom to tell the teacher Mr. Huggins and her
friends. Mr. Huggins told her she was probably seeing
things and hearing things, but he had a worried look on
his face. The last time the kids had saw a ghost was
when he started to work after the other teacher died of
a heart attack. That was twenty years ago. He thought
that all the ghosts were gone.
After Moriah told Mr. Huggins she told her best friend
Anna Marie Lewis the whole thing. She gasp she said that
they should tell Joey Sue Finkle, Mary Louise Houston,
Patrick Ruth Day, and Stewart Ridge Bird. Moriah agreed.
She said we should tell them after class was over. Anna
said ok.
After class it was lunch recess. They only get it in
Elementary. This is their last year because their in
fifth grade. They talked about what Moriah had saw.
Joey, Stewart, and Patrick said that they should go to
the basement. The girls said no, but the boys got their
way. So they went downstairs all together. The six of
them got a shiver running up and down their backs. Joey
was the bravest he said he will go down first. Anna
asked if he was sure. She tried to make sure everyone
was safe. Joey said yes without a hesitation. When he
went down the stairs. The stairs creaked under him. When
the creaking stop Moriah yelled down are you okay? He
said you need to come and look at this you guys.
They started down the stairs, Stewart came down before
Patrick and the girls. He saw what Joey saw. Stewart
cried sick thats disgusting. Now they were all down
stairs. The girls almost screamed, but Joey, Stewart,
and Patrick covered their mouths. Then they said what
is that gooey stuff? Joey said I don't know? I think I
have a bad feeling. I think we should go, said Moriah.
Wait where is Patrick? said Anna recognizing that he
was gone.
HELP ME!
They looked all over the place! Then Patrick came out of
a dark corner laughing his head off! Mary said that was
not nice we been looking for you something really could
have happened to you. Patrick said okay. Later that day
Patrick went down stairs without them and never came
out. Joey was his best friend and they are in the same
class. When he was not there Joey got worried a lot. He
told the principal. He said Patrick probably went home..
After that day Joey forgot about Patricks disappearance.
Stewart saw a ghost by the basement door saying that
Patrick was down stairs and should go get him. So
Stewart did. He never came up. Mary was the only one
that notice that Stewart was gone, but she kept it to
her self. The days dragged by and Patrick, and Stewart
were still missing.
Moriah went down stairs to find the boys, but that was a
bad idea because the one that had Stewart, and Patrick
was the ghost!
Moriah was going down the basement stairs and saw
Patrick, and Stewart. She said how long have you been
down here? Patrick said We have been down here the
first day you saw that ghost. That was two weeks ago,
Patrick said Moriah. Let me help you up stairs said
Moriah. They both screamed NO!!!
Then the ghost showed up out of no where. Now it was
Moriah’s turn to scream, but nothing came out of her
mouth. Then she past out when she woke up she was in a
cage.
TWO DAYS LATER…..
Anna kept bugging Joey about Moriah sudden
disappearance. Joey answer
no one knows where the are at.
Now a year has past and they were no where to be found
until now. This year Coriena saw the four kids that went
missing, but she saw them in a different form. A GHOST
FORM!!!
The Haunted
Sam and Briten
It all started when Sam and Briten left their house door
open. One day Sam and Briten went out side for three
hours. They rode ponys deep into the woods. Then they
heard a howl and a yell! Their ponys went crazy and ran
away. Sam and Briten ran back to the house. The door was
open. They ran into the house and it was trashed. Junk
was everywhere and the sink was crushed.
They heard another howl. They ran into the closet and
hid. They heard big foot steps. Briten opened the door.
He saw big foot right there and dog man in the kitchen!
Briten closed the door and screamed.
Then they saw a trap door. They opened it. Briten
remembered it was a trap. The hole house xploded. No one
was ever heard from again.
The Haunted School
Blanca & Taylor
It’s the night before Halloween and Holy, Molly, Jake,
and their Chihuahua
were getting ready for Halloween. The next morning Holly
and Molly’s brother was waiting for them as the bus was
coming. Jake was calling their names. When they got on
the bus there was no one on the bus. Except the bus
driver, but he even looked weird. Molly noticed that the
bus stopped at a school named Spooky School. There were
kids in weird clothes. They went in the school and Holly
went missing. Jake and Molly saw zombies, witches, and
vampires. They were eating worms and drinking blood.
Molly was scared and so was Jake. They were looking for
Holly but she was no where to be found. Some zombies
looked at them and said HUMANS out loud. They ran as
fast as they could but they stayed behind them. They
found a small house and went in it. There was a ghost!
They ran around the house but the ghost said wait its me
Holly. Jake and Molly looked at each other and said,
“WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?” Holly said, “I have been
attacked by a ghost when you two went in the school.
Then the ghost put a spell on me. The only way to break
the spell is to find roses and put them around me. I’ll
then turn back to a human.” Jake, Molly, and Holly
wondered where find a rose? They looked behind the
house. There were a lot of flowers but they found some
roses. They quickly ran inside and put the roses around
Holly and she turned back to a human. Then they heard
someone calling their names, “Holly, Molly, Jake wake
up! You’re going to be late for school.” They all woke
up, but thought didn’t we just go to school?!?
Mr.
Linden’s Library
Eliaylia, grade 5
He had warned her about the book. Now it was too late.
One day their was a girl named Emily. She was 22 years
old. Her favorite thing to do is read. She went to the
library everyday when she could get it in her schedule.
Today the first thing she did when she got out of bed
was go to library. When she got to the library her
favorite librarian was there. His name was Mr. Linden.
He helped her look for books, but today she knew exactly
what book she wanted. The name of the book was
The Adventure In The Jungle.
The last book she read told that the book was cursed and
it will bring you to that place you’re reading of. There
are more of the books in the library, but she has not
located them yet. She knew only where one was and it’s
the one that she is going to check out. As she past the
bathrooms the janitor came out and said “that book is
cursed you know that right?” Emily said “ ya I know.”
She just kept on walk.
Then she saw Mrs. Collins she went to go say hi.Then she
turned around and said “hi.” Emily said “hi” to. Mrs.
Collins asked “ what book do you have there?” Emily
showed her the books cover. She almost screaming “get
that book away from me!”
Emily ran to Mr. Linden. “I want to check this book out
please”said Emily. Mr. Linden said “are you sure you
want to check this book out?” “This book is cursed.”
“Yes “said Emily.
“I warn you that you travel to that place when you get
to page 22.” “ I want to read the book.” “Ok “said Mr.
Linden. When she got home she want some milk, but there
was no milk so she had to go to the store. When she got
to the store she started to read the book and walk at
the same time.
When she got to the milk place she got the milk and went
to the counter to pay for it. Then she looked up and saw
Mr. Linden. Emily said “hi Mr. Linden.” Mr. Linden
looked to see who had said his name. Then he saw Emily
and said “hi. You started to read that book?” ”Yes” said
Emily. “Its a good book and I'm only on page 10.”Well
good bye Mr. Linden.” As soon as Emily got home she
started to read the book again, but with a glass of
milk. When it got dark out She went to lay down and
read. Before she went in the room she washed her dishes.
When she went in her room she laid down and read her
book. She was on page 21. Emily said aloud “nothing is
going to happen.” When she turned to page 22 she read
the whole thing and she got knock out!
When she woke up she was not in her room any more. She
was in the jungle. The jungle in the book she was
reading!
So Mr. Linden was right the book is really cursed! As
she woke up more and more she notice that there were
animals. Jungle animals. She was scared to even move.
Her heart was pounding so hard the animals could hear
it. Finally she got up and ran for life when she saw the
lion coming! She screamed so hard that she almost
choked. As she ran she saw more people huddling around
each other. They looked so scared. Emily finally stopped
at a girl who was by herself. She didn’t look scared
until I came near her. Emily said “I won’t hurt you.”
The little girl said “who are you?” “ my name is Emily,
what is your name?” “ My name is Alice, I have been her
for so long I lost count 5 years ago.” Emily said “is
your mother here?” “No” said Alice. “I came here by
myself.” “ Well “said Emily “you can go home with me
once I find a way out of here.” “ There is no way out of
here.” Your body stays on earth and you become part of
the story.” “ I have a life out there I just started my
life.” “ There has to be one way out and I’m going to
find it.” “ok whatever you say.” Good bye Emily” said
Alice.
As Emily was walking she saw more families, and she saw
one with a baby. She went over there, and the said “ who
are you?” My name is Emily, what’s your name?” “Name is
Allie, we came here two years ago.” I’m going to find a
way to get out of here, you can go with me if you want.”
“ No I like it here more then the real world, but there
is a wizard named Sam, he will take care of all your
problems, like go back to earth.” Ok then, where can I
find him?” “ On the other side of the woods now go
before its too late!”
Emily ran from her, what did she mean before its too
late? She was half way through the forest she thought
that she saw some movement near by. She thought to
herself I’m just seeing things, I’m just a little tired.
So she kept going until she saw it again. The movement
said “WHO ENTERS THE GREAT WIZARD SAM’S PLACE?” Emily
was scared, but determined to get home so she yelled
back “ IT IS ME EMILY HERE TO SEEK THE WIZARD SAM SO HE
CAN SEND ME HOME.” Then came out a man. Emily asked are
you the wizard I was told of from this girl named
Allie?” “Yes” said Sam. “ Now emily did you come all
this way just to come home?” “Yes” said Emily. “ I’m
afraid It’s too dark out to do magic, you will have to
come back tomorrow.” “ok “said Emily.
She was so sad that she was too late. She thought that
she will sleep outside. She was half asleep when the sun
rised. She got up and went to the wizard. The wizard
said when she got closer “You what to go to the real
world?” “Yes” said Emily. “Ok “ said Sam. “Here we go.”
When she woke up she was at her house. Finally said
Emily, I’m finally here. Then she went to the library.
Then she said to Mr. Linden “you guys were right about
the book, it really is cursed.
The
House
on Maple
Street
By Alexia ,
grade 5
“It was a perfect lift off,” Katie
said to Lexi as they walked in a hurry to get home. It
was really late and the two girls walked past the
haunted house on Maple Street.
“I wonder if anybody lives there,”
Lexi said in a scared voice. Then all of the sudden the
lights started to flicker on and off. The two girls
started to run home. Finally, they were home. The girls
went up stairs to Lexi’s room and talked.
Then Katie asked, “Where are we
going to trick or treat tomorrow?”
Lexi said, “Well, if you’re not
scared, how about we go to Maple Street?”
Katie whispered, “Sure.” Then they
talked themselves to sleep. The next morning the alarm
went off and woke both girls up. They got into their
costumes and ran down stairs.
Lexi’s mom said, “Don’t stay out
too late girls.” They didn’t answer though. They just
ran. They stopped at the first house on Maple Street and
knocked on the door and yelled, “Trick or treat!”
The guy gave them one sucker and
two spider rings. Then they went to the next house and
the next. Then we finally reached the haunted house.
“Should we go in there?” Katie
said. Lexi said, “Sure.” The two girls walked up the
stairs. Then they stopped, not sure if they should go in
or not. They then decided to go in.
Lexi rang the doorbell, but nobody
answered. The girls opened the door anyway. They started
to walk up the stairs. Then they stopped and the lights
started to flicker on and off. The two girls screamed
in a panic.
The girls rushed downstairs as
fast as they could. Lexi tried to open the door but it
would not open! Katie screamed, “Let’s try going out a
window!”
Lexi said, “Good idea!” The girls
tried opening the window. It wouldn’t open. Then out of
nowhere a voice yelled, “You can’t get out! You’re
trapped!” The girls screamed even louder this time.
“Let’s go back upstairs and see if
there is a phone!” Katie and Lexi ran back up stairs.
Lexi yelled, “There’s a phone!” The girls dialed her
moms number.
“Hello?” Lexi said into the phone.
No one answered, so Lexi hung up the phone. The girls
turned around and they both screamed. There before their
eyes was this huge, disgusting, slimy, green blob.
It yelled, “You better run!” The
girls didn’t waste any time and they both ran. The girls
looked behind them and the big green blob was gone.
“What happened to the blob?” Lexi
asked. Katie did not answer. That made her more scared.
Finally, the lights started flickering. Katie said, “I
think the lights start to flicker when something scary
happens.”
“I think the same,” said Lexi.
“Whats that noise?” Katie said.
“Not to scare you but I think its
the Big Green Blob?!” The girls turned around. This time
it was a huge, disgusting, slimy Blue Blob!! The Girls
ran! Of course the lights started to flicker. They both
screamed. They ran up the stairs. Then they went into
some room. It was dark and they could not find the light
switch.
Finally, Katie found the light
switch. They screamed! The whole room was filled with
fake clowns, spiders, and ghosts! Katie frantically
asked, “Do you think they're gone?”
Lexi quickly said, “Yes! Lets go!”
Lexi opened the door. The blob wasn't there! They
decided to go see if the door was unlocked. They went
downstairs. Lexi tried to open the door. Of course it
didn't open.
“Man! I thought it would open. I
wonder where the two Blobs disappeared to?” said Katie.
“Do you want to go look in some of
the rooms?” Lexi said.
“Sure,” Katie stated.
“Let’s go look upstairs first,”
Lexi stated.
“Ok,” Katie sighed. They slowly
walked upstairs. Lexi’s trembling hands reached for the
door handle. Surprisingly, the light was already on. The
room was completely plain and empty it seemed, but they
could feel in their souls there was something in there.
Lexi terrifyingly said, “Help me
look for some clues.” Then the girls looked and looked,
but stilll could not find anything.
Katie said in amazement, “I found
something!” Lexi rushed over to what Katie was staring
at. It was a huge dusty book. Together, they blew the
thin dust away from the book cover. They opened it
slowly and carefully. Inside the book, was a rusty old
key.
Katie quietly said, “What do you
think it’s to? Let’s hurry downstairs and try the door.”
They crossed their fingers. Lexi slowly stuck the key in
the lock, and twisted it anxiously. You’re not going to
believe this, but the door opened.
The girls screamed in amazement
and ran as fast as their legs would move, all the way
home. When they got home, Lexi’s mom said, “How much
candy did you girls get tonight?”
They stuttered, not knowing what
to say. “All we got was one sucker and two spider
rings,” Lexi responded. Then they looked in their bags,
and surprisingly there was way more candy than they had
before. Lexi whispered in Katie’s ear, “MAGIC!”

Mrs. McCarthy's 5th grade Reading class
has been working on a writing assignment
too, based on the book ...
The Mystery of
Harris Burdick.
by author Chris Van
Allsburg
(and "solved" by Mrs. McCarthy's
5th Grade Reading Class)
Chris Van
Allsburg came across the pictures of
Harris Burdick through a publisher
friend named Peter Wenders. Mr. Burdick
presented the pictures with their titles
and captions to Wenders in hopes that
Wenders would be interested in
purchasing the stories that accompanied
the illustrations. Wenders was intrigued
by the pictures and asked Burdick to
submit the corresponding stories the
next day. However, Wenders never heard
from Harris Burdick again, so the "true"
stories behind the pictures were never
revealed.
Students
were asked to consider one of the
images, its title and its caption, and
then to propose a possible story that
tells what happened before and after the
corresponding image. Because this
assignment took place prior to
Halloween, many students chose to enter
their stories in the Manistee County
Library Scary Story Contest.
Enjoy
these great tales!

The House on Maple Street
by Coriena, grade 5
It was a perfect lift-off.
One day Brody, Lauren, Eva, and Jordan were taking a
walk down Maple street. When they got back Eva and
Jordan went inside and Lauren and Brody stayed outside.
When Eva went to go get Lauren and Brody for dinner they
weren’t there. Eva called for Jordan and he came running
out of the house. Jordan said, “what’s wrong!” Eva said,
“Lauren and Brody are missing!” “Oh no they're missing!”
said Jordan.” We still need to go trick or treating so
we can look for them after that” said Eva. But their our
siblings. I know but I really want to go trick or
treating. So do I but family is more important then
trick or treating. “Ya so” said Eva. “Fine we can look
for them after” said Jordan. So Eva and Jordan went
inside to get into their costumes. Eva is going as a cow
girl and Jordan is going as Batman. Eva and Jordan went
down in their basement to get their bags for their
candy. So when they head out for trick or treating they
hear two people screaming that sounded like Lauren and
Brody. Eva and Jordan ran following the voices. When Eva
and Jordan got to where the screaming stopped they
looked to the left of them and didn’t see or hear
anything so they looked to the right of them and saw
their siblings hanging by their feet by a rope. “Oh my
gosh” said Eva. “Get us down” yelled Brody! “Got it”
said Jordan. So Jordan and Eva ran to go get them down.
When they got down Eva asked “what happened.” “well”
said Lauren an old man said he was lost so we asked if
he lived in this area if he knew and he said yes he did
so we walked for a little while and then he said that
was his house it was big and yellow. The old man asked
if we wanted to come in but we said we should be heading
home but he said not in a million years. so the old man
hung us by our feet. We were screaming so much and he
was just laughing. “Well it’s a good thing we got here
when we could” said Jordan. “Well I think we should call
the cops” said Eva. “I agree to that” said Lauren So
they called the cops and the man was arrested. It’s a
good thing he was arrested because we don’t want a crazy
old man on the loose. Now let’s go trick or treating!
“Ya” said Brody.
Uninvited Guests
by Adam, grade 5
It was like that movie I saw,
Paronormal Activity. The doorknob had started to
turn all by itself!
It all started when my new neighbors
moved in, the Blanes. They weren’t, well... normal.
They are creepy. They have a little boy about my
age.
Last week he started to stare at our
house on River Street. Since then, weird things
started to happen. Our clock started to run
backwards, like today when I got home from school my
iphone started to ring. It spelled out GET OUT. I
almost whizzed my pants.
Anyway mom was home and she said,
“Did you go over to the Blanes today honey?”
“No,” I said.
“Why not?” she replied.
”I don’t know its just, oh, they’re
weird.”
“Well guess what?” she said.
“What?” I answered.
“Their little boy is starting at your
school on Monday,” mom said.
GULP! That night my friend Ryan
called me and said, ”Is that kid still staring at
your house?”
“No,” I replied.
“Look again,” he said. I looked out
the window and he was there but he was not looking
at our house. He was looking at some other house. I
sat there for a moment staring in amazement but then
unexpectedly he looked at me!
The lights turned off, the door shut,
and it locked all by itself. My heart was pounding.
My mind was racing, and then it all stopped.
I was dead.
The Scary Sleepover
Jenna & Kirstin
Jennifer decided to have a sleepover with her
best friends on Halloween. The girls decided to
play a game together. They went to Jennifer’s room
and played Truth or Dare. Jennifer dared Natalie to
go into the bathroom for a minute and say bloody
Mary 13 times. Natalie did it, and on the 13th time
she said it, she told the other girls that a bloody
Mary face had popped into the mirror. Then Natalie
screamed, “BLOODY MARY!’’ Jennifer said, “ What?’’
Natalie told her that there was bloody Mary person
in the mirror. All of the girls at the sleepover
rushed to the bathroom to see if bloody Mary was
still in the mirror, but she was gone. The girls
laughed and didn’t believe Natalie. They thought
she was kidding. Natalie said, “Let’s say bloody
Mary again 13 times and see if she comes back.” So
the girls all said bloody Mary 13 times, and this
time, bloody Mary came running into the bathroom and
ran right up to the girls! “AHHHHH,” screamed all
of the girls at once. The girls ran out of the
bathroom as fast as they could. They could hardly
breathe because they were so terrified. They ran
into the kitchen and thought they were safe, but
bloody Mary came running into the kitchen after
them! Jennifer ran to the phone to try to call 911,
but bloody Mary grabbed the phone from her, and
unplugged it. Jennifer and her friends screamed and
ran towards the door. They wanted to get out of the
house and away from bloody Mary. Then they noticed
that Natalie was gone. The girls wondered where she
went. Just then, bloody Mary came running out of
the house and was heading straight for them! They
all screamed again, and started to run away, but
bloody Mary yelled, “Stop!” The girls looked back
just in time to see bloody Mary grabbing her face
and pulling on it. Underneath the mask, was
Natalie. She had been pretending to be bloody Mary
the whole time. “I really scared you, didn’t I?”
said Natalie. “You sure did,” said all of the girls
with a laugh. “This was the scariest sleepover
ever,” said Jennifer.
Not-So-Sweet-Candyland
Moriah & Ajah
Once upon a time there were two little girls. Their
names were Asia and Maria. They were best friends.
One day they went for a walk in the park and found a
candy store. They went in and saw a new candy
called Triple Berry Blue Berry Blast. They asked the
sales clerk if they could try it and he said yes.
When Maria took a bite she said she felt weird so
Asia tryed it. Then they started to shrink. The next
thing you know they turned into candy. They were in
a candy land it was called Island of the Sweets.
When they appeared they were surrounded by candy
and two gummy bears. The gummy bears greeted them
and said, “Welcome to Island of the Sweets. My name
is Gummy Gro and this is Gummy Grandpa. What is your
name?” My name is Maria and mine is Asia. Gummy Gro
said, ”Asia your name is boring so is Marias. Your
new names are Asia Airhead and Maria Marshmallow.”
At the corner of Maria’s eye she saw a gummy
statue. They ran to it and took a big bite. All of
the gummy bears started to attack. They saw a
Gingerbread house and ran inside. No one was there
but they saw a note that said, find the three
missing golden gummy worms. They looked all over but
they only found one under a rock. The gummy bears
came up to Maria and Asia and said, ”I will lock you
up in the onion fungin!” OH KNOW NOT THE ONION
FUNGIN!!!
Then Maria started to scream. Asia asked, “What’s
wrong?” Maria said, “They’re handcuffing us with
Life Savers.” Then they walked the girls to the
onion fungin and put them in it. The windows were
all black so they couldn’t see where they were
going. Maria and Asia started to feel scared. When
they got inside of the onion fungin Maria could not
get through the door because she was a marshmallow.
So they pushed and pushed then she got in. After
that they both got in.
After a whole day they started to see more kids
going in the fungin. Asia said, “There must be lots
of kids eating the candy.” After a while they heard
somebody say kacho-ba-blue! Turn those kids back to
humans! Then they all turned back to humans. They
were still in the candy store and no time had
passed. So they went home and told their parents
this story and they said, “You girls were probably
just day dreaming.”
The Harp
By Sky, grade 5
So its true she thought, it’s really true.
“I can’t wait for the scavenger hunt today,” Mia
said.
“Me neither,” Liz said. Mia and Liz were best
friends.
“Too bad your brother has to come with us,” Mia
said. I
“ know he always ruins the fun.” It was true Liz's
brother always ruined their fun. Then that was when
Chris, Liz’s brother, walked in.
“Are you slowpokes coming or what?” he said.
“It’s only 9:30,” Liz said.
“Yeah, what’s the rush?” Mia said.
“I want to get there early,” he said. Chris started
stomping his foot impatiently.
“Why?” Liz asked.
“Just come on,” he said.
“No I’m still getting ready,” Liz said, “so you’ll
just have to wait.”
“Well I’m not waiting,” he said. Then he left. What
a pain, Liz thought.
When the two girls were done they left. “I am so
happy my mom said I could come with you on the
scavenger hunt,” Mia said.
“Me too,” Liz agreed. The three finally arrived
after what seemed like hours of walking.
“Hello girls,” a friendly voice said. It was the
lady who was running the scavenger hunt.
“Hello,” Liz said back.
“I am assuming you three are here for the scavenger
hunt.”
“Yup,” Chris said. It was surprising he answered
her. Usually he never answered anyone.
“Well it looks like you three get a head start,” the
woman said.
“Cool,” Chris said. Then he was off. The two girls
were just standing there thinking, What is she
talking about we can’t go until the rest of the kids
come.
“Go,” the lady said, “go catch up with your friend.”
The two girls just decided to go along. The three
were together walking. Mia had the map.
“I don’t even get the direction,” Mia said. The
woods got dark.
“Mia,” Liz said, “does the map even go this far?”
“I’m not sure.” Then a speck of light reflected off
something.
“What is that?” Chris asked.
“I don’t know,” Liz said.
“Whatever it is, it’s cool,” Chris said.
“No Chris you're not even going to think about it,”
Liz said. Liz knew her brother was going to head
towards the light.
“You’re not my boss.” Then Chris was off.
“No Chris!” Liz shouted. Chris did not answer. He
was in shock. The thing was a harp. A golden harp so
shiny.
“Wow,” Liz said after she finally reached it.
“Can I touch it?” Chris asked.
“No,” Liz said as she went to reach for his hand.
“Let’s get out of here,” Mia said in a scared voice.
“I don’t like the woods.”
“Never,” a voice said, “not in a million years.”
Liz screamed, “RUN!!!!!!” You did not have to tell
them twice at a moment like this. The three
scattered all around in panic.
“Ha ha ha ha,” the strange voice chuckled.
“Let us go,” Liz said.
“Never!” the voice said once again.
“Why not?” Mia asked.
“Never!” the voice shouted.
“I’m not scared,” Chris said.
“You're not?” the voice said. “Well, well, well,
then you wouldn't be scared to do a test?”
“No,” Chris said.
“What kind of test?” Liz interriupted.
“A simple test.” Chris walked all around trying to
find what was talking.
“Where are you?” Chris asked.
“I am the harp,” the voice said.
“The harp?” Mia said. “But haps can’t talk.” The
harp did not answer, it did not even talk.
“Hello?” Mia said. “Is anyone there?” Still no one
answered.
“He’s gone,” Liz said. There was a moment then they
all started to run. When they were where the the
lady that gave them the map and all the stuff, they
took a break.
“Thank God we’re out of there,” Liz said.
“I know right,” Mia said. Then they all started to
go home and tell everyone about their adventure.
Under the Rug
By James, grade 5
Two weeks passed, and it happened again. The rug
moved! Mark could swear he had seen the rug move.
Mark picked up a chair. His heart was pounding so
hard like a hammer pounds a nail. His hands were
shaking like he was dancing. He was so scared that
he grabbed a chair ready to whack whatever it was.
Carefully he picked up the corner the rug. He looked
under it. “OMG!” he yelled. It was a gremlin! He
ran away in fear.
Then Mark ran and he pick up the phone and called
911.Then the gremlin ran out the window and Mark
chased it and he got lost it in the snow.
He found it on his car. He started to run away
because it started attacking him.
Poor Mark, he was never seen or heard from again.
The House on Spooksville Road
By Keely-Shaye , Grade 5
A cold wind blew that night as Sara looked out her
window. She looked across her yard and saw a mist by
the old pond. She heard her stomach grumble so she
went stairs. The stairs creaked as Sara went down
them. She saw an old man by the old pond with a
shovel. There was dirt flying up from one corner to
the other.
Then she saw a stone. It said: Mrs.Welshington.
There was a note carved in it and sara read it. It
said, “ I hoped you knew how much I loved you.” Then
she went back to bed.The next morning she heard mom
say,”Come on help me with these boxes, they’re
heavy.”
They got all the boxes in the moving truck and they
got in the van. Then her dad said, “Off to our new
house. Aren’t you excited Sara?”
“Yeah.” That’s when Sara saw their new house. It
looked old and creepy.
“Well this is it,” said dad. “Let’s unpack okay?”
Mom got out of the car. She said, “Once we fix it
up, it will be beautiful. Look, there’s your
bedroom.” Sara looked in her bed room.
“It’s so big,” she said, “and my closet is huge.
finally I have a place to store my pictures and
shoes.” Then she started unpacking. Finally she was
finished.
Mom said, “Get in the shower and get ready for
bed.” Sara got into bed. It was nice to have a
bigger bed.
Then Sara woke up. It was 1:00 in the morning. She
heard this terrible noise. Then she saw it, these
hideous looking creatures. They were ghosts, ugly
ones too! Then she woke up her mom and dad and
yelled. They came.
“What’s wrong?” said dad.
“Look!” Mom’s eyes popped out. Sara looked back.
They were being lifted up by a bunch of ghosts. She
heard the door open. He saw a man. He walked up and
he grabbed her and pulled her in the ground along
with her parents. They screamed as they tied them up
and put them on leashes and chains around their
necks.
“No one can hear you now,” he laughed then he
laughed.
A couple days passed, then a month. They all looked
like skeletons. Finally three years later, they
found and pulled their bodies out and burned them,
and everyone forgot all about them.
OSCAR AND ALPHONSE
By: Taylor ,grade 5
She knew it was time to send them back. The
caterpillars softly wiggled in her hand, spelling
out ‘’Goodbye.’’ She started to cry. She did not wat
to send them back.
The little tiny caterpillars started to climb up her
arm and snuggled to her neck. They did not want to
go either but they had to go back to their family.
So Natalie walked the little tiny caterpillars home
and on the way they took an adventure!
They first went through a jungle. They met a monkey
that gave them bananas to eat. After the monkeys,
they met a lion that took them for a ride right out
of the jungle into the home of the caterpillars!
They were so excited to see their family, but sad to
leave their friend Natalie. The little caterpillars
climbed up Natalie’s arm and spelled out ‘’Goodbye’’
again. Natalie started to cry and said goodbye back
to them.
When Natalie was walking home she was thinking about
all the parties she has, and she can always give the
little tiny caterpillars a card that would say they
can come too.
When Natalie got home her parents were listening to
her crying. They asked her why was she crying.
Natalie said it was because she had to let her
caterpillars go. Her parents said that she did a
good thing. Now Natalie feels a lot better know that
so know she did the good thing.
