Matthew Henson

Matthew Henson was an amazing African-American. His
full name is Matthew Alexander Henson. He had a bunch of
jobs or occupations some of them were cabin boy and an
explorer. He was born on August 8,1866 Nanjemoy,
Maryland. Matthew Henson is sort of famous now. He had
no education because he ran away when he was a little
boy. When he was a teen he became a cabin boy. He
married Lucy Ross in 1909. He died on March ninth at the
Bronx, New York at the age of 88. He didn’t have any
kids with Lucy Ross.
Matthew Henson played a big
role in African-American history. Here are some
interesting facts. He was the first person to reach the
North Pole. They reached it on April 6,1906. His first
job was at a restaurant sweeping floors. He also lived
there. At the age of twenty he was a licensed sailor.
Five people and forty dogs went with him to the North
Pole. Matthew Henson was the co-discoverer of the North
Pole along with Robert E Peary. Matthew Henson was an
amazing explorer.
Percy Sutton

Percy Ellis Sutton is an
amazing person. Percy was known as the Wizard of Ooze.
He was born in San Antonio, Texas on November 24, 1920.
In 1943 he married Leatrice Sutton. His mom Lillia and
his dad Samuel had 15 kids. Percy had three kids of his
own. They’re names are Pierre, Cheryln, and Essie. He
went to five different colleges. Three of the five
colleges are Parie View A&M University, Tuskegee
Institute, and Brooklyn law. His jobs were a lawyer,
Civil-rights activist, and an entrepreneur. Sadly on
December 26, 2009 Percy Ellis Sutton died. He was 89.
Percy did many things that helped the
African Americans. He was a freedom Rider and a
Civil-rights activist. Percy was a legal representative
for Malcolm X. He represented more than 200 activist
arrested during the 1963-1964 time frame. Percy was the
longest elected Manhattan Borough President for almost
12 years. He was also highest ranking official in New
York City. Some interesting facts are he helped save the
Apollo Theater from bankruptcy. Percy was the youngest
of 15 children. He was a military captain and served for
four years. He also used to sell milk when he was
little. Percy Ellis Sutton was a great person.
Stevie Wonder

Stevie Wonder is really
awesome! Stevie Wonder’s real name is Stevie Hardaway
Judkins. His family also called him Little Stevie
Wonder. Stevie Wonder was born May 13, 1950. He was born
in Saginaw Michigan. He married Kai Milla Morris. Then
he married Syreeta Wright. Stevie Wonder had seven kids.
He had his education at the Michigan Schools for the
Blind in Lansing Michigan. Stevie’s occupation is
singer-songwriter, multi instrumentalist. He is also a
record producer.
Stevie’s role in African
American History is that he didn’t stop until he reached
his goal. That made other people influenced. He also was
blind and still played instruments. Like the piano. That
showed people that know matter what. You can always do
what you want to do. Some cool facts about Stevie Wonder
are that he was born in Michigan! Thats really cool how
someone so big in music history was born right here in
MICHIGAN! Another cool fact is that he is blind. Wait
thats not all. He is blind and he plays a bunch of
instruments. Its so cool how he can play instruments
like the piano without even seeing the piano keys! How
does he do it. Stevie Wonder is a really cool guy in
African American History.
Muhammad Ali

Muhammad Ali is a famous African
American boxer. Muhammad Ali was the Heavyweight
Champion of the World. He was an Olympic gold medal
champion too. He was also a Golden Gloves champion in
Kentucky. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in
January of 1942. He has been married four times. He has
two sons and seven daughters. He started boxing in 1960
and he retired in 1999. He did not attend college
because he was too busy. He wanted to keep boxing.
Muhammad Ali is still alive to this
very day. He is in the Olympic Hall of Fame. His
nickname was was “The Greatest.” His name was Cassius
Clay before he changed it to Muhammad Ali. He won 37
fights by knockout. He made made up the saying, float
like a butterfly and sting like a bee. He still lives
in Kentucky. He won 57 fights. He sold boxing gloves
called Muhammad Ali boxing gloves. He knocked out an
undefeated heavyweight named Joe Frazier. He worked out
in the gym for four hours a day. Now he is 71 years
old. In his last fight in New York City he was about to
lose, but he cocked his arm back and knocked the fighter
out. Muhammad Ali was a great African American boxer.
Barack Obama

Barack Obama is the 44th President.
He is the first African American President. He was born
August 4,1961 in Honolulu, Hawaii. He married Michelle
Robinson in 1992. They have two kids. Their names are
Maylia and Sasha. Sasha was born 2001. Maylia was born
1998. Barack Obama went to Columbia University. He also
went to Harvard Law School. He was a lawyer and a U.S.
Senator before he became President of the United States
twice. He was elected first in 2008. He was elected
again in 2012. He has worked hard to help all Americans
get health care. He won the nobel peace prize in 2009.
He has written two nonfiction books. One is called,
Dreams From My Father, the other one is called,
The Audacity of Hope. Both of the books are
bestsellers. Barack Obama is an amazing President.

,1942. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky. Ali’s
first wife was Sonji Roi. Ali’s second wife was Belinda
Boyd. Ali’s third wife was Veronica Porsche. His fourth
wife, who he is still married to, is Yolanda Williams.
Muhammad Ali has 9 children. He has 7 girls. He has 2
boys. Ali went to school at Kentucky Central High
School in Louisville, Kentucky. He did not go to
college because he wanted to box.
Muhammad Ali was a terrific boxer. He
learned to box at 12 years old. He was fast. He could
hit really hard. His nickname was, “The greatest.” He

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Martin Luther King, Jr. was a great
African American. He was born on January 15, 1929, in
Atlanta, Georgia. He died on April 4, 1968, in Memphis,
Tennessee. He married Coretta Scott in June of 1953.
They had four children named Yolanda, Martin Luther
King III, Dexter Scott, and Bernice. Martin Luther King
Jr. graduated from Morehouse College. He also graduated
from Crozer Theological Seminary. He was a minister. He
was also a Civil Rights activist. He worked hard to
gain equal rights for African Americans. Martin Luther
king, Jr. contributed to black history by leading the
Civil Rights movement in the United States from the
middle 1950’s until his death from being shot by James
Earl Ray in 1968.
Martin Luther King, Jr. was 35 when
he won the Nobel Peace Prize. He showed the world that
Civil Rights could happen without violence. His “I Have
a Dream” speech is one of the most famous speeches in
history. Martin Luther King Jr. was an inspiring man.
He changed the world for the better. He will never be
forgotten. He was a great leader. People still look up
to him. We honor him every January on Martin Luther
King day. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great African
American leader.
Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis is an outstanding musician. Wynton was
born on October 18, 1961 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
Wynton is 51 years old. Wynton married Candace Standly.
They have one child named Jasper Armstrong. Wynton has
five siblings. Their names are Ellis III, Jason,
Delfeayo, Branford, and Mboya. The famous Ellis Marsalis
is Wynton’s father and Wynton’s mother’s name is Delores
Marsalis. Wynton’s education was at Juilliard Schools
and at Ben Franklin High Schools. His occupations are a
trumpeter, composer, a music educator, and an artistic
director of jazz in New York City.
Wynton Marsalis has won nine Grammy Awards. Wynton’s
role in African American History is that he was the
first American to ever win the Grammy Awards in both
Jazz and Classical Records in 1983. Some interesting
facts about Wynton Marsalis are that he was six years
old when he got his first trumpet. After Hurricane
Katrina, Wynton helped reconstruct houses in a village
When Wynton was 14 he began playing with the New
Orleans Philharmonic group. When Wynton was 17 he became
the youngest musician ever accepted in into Tanglewood’s
Berkshire Music Center in Lenox, Massachusetts. One of
Wynton’s albums stayed on the charts for 39 weeks. At
age eight he performed traditional New Orleans music in
the Fairview Baptist Church band led by legendary Danny
Barker. In 1980 Wynton entered Juilliard school in New
York to study the classical trumpet. In 1980 Wynton
joined the band led by the master drummer Art Blakey. In
years that followed, Wynton performed with Sarah
Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Gerry Muillgan, John Lewis,
Sweet Edison, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, and Countless
other jazz legends. Wynton Marsalis is an amazing
musician.

Jack Robinson

Jackie Robinson was a great
guy. His full name is Jack Roosevelt Robinson. His
nickname was Jackie. Jacks occupation was being an
athlete. He married a woman named Rachel. They had three
kids. Their names were Jackie Robinson Jr., David
Robinson, and Sharon Robinson. Jack was born on January
31, 1919. He was at Cairo, Georgia U.S.. His education
was at four different schools. The names were John Muir
High School, Pasadena City College, University of
California, and Los Angles. He left College to support
his mother. He died on October 24,1972. He was 53 years
old when he died. Jack died in Stanford, Connecticut
U.S.. He died because of a massive car accident. He
would probably want the life in the 21 century.

woman in space. Jemison was in space for 190 hours 30
minutes and 23 seconds.She went in space at the age of
22. Mae became an astronaut August 1988. When Jemison
was three her family moved to Chicago Illinois to take
advantage of better educational opportunities there. Mae
entered Stanford University in 1973. Jemison went to
Stanford for medical Education. When she graduated
medical school Jemison joined the peace corps. Now Mae
Carol Jemison is retired. She was an awesome person and
a great astronaut!

His name is Malcolm Little. Latter in life, He changed
his name to Malcolm X and married Betty Sanders. They
had six children. There names are Ilyasah, Qubilah,
Malaak, Attallah, Gamila, and Malikah Shabazz. Malcolm X
dropped of high school. His teacher told him he couldn’t
be who he wanted to be, a lawyer. Malcolm X had tons of
jobs. These included, A Minister in several different
temples, Funding new temples, Establishing a national
newspaper, Selling drugs, And helping on a train. He
also got arrested several times. That’s when he changed
his name to Malcolm X.

History is a civil rights activist. Some people say he’s
one of the best! He believed that blacks should treat
wights the way they treat them. Also Including Violence.
More than 5,000 people followed him. Some interesting

when his sister was growing up, she was mighty fond of
her skin color, Which was almost never heard those days.

speech In New york, N.Y. On February 21, 1965,At the age
of 36, Three men shot him 15 times. Once at the

July 2, 1908 thats when it
all started. That’s when Thoroughgood Marshall was born
in Baltimore, Maryland in the United States of America.
He grew up in Baltimore and in second grade shortened
his name to Thurgood because he didn’t like spelling
Thoroughgood. He stayed in Baltimore to attend Frederick
Douglass High School. Then he went to college at Lincoln
University in Pennsylvania to become a dentist. Then
instead went to Howard University School of Law. Later
he married Vivian “Buster” Burey. They had no children
and were married from 1929 to 1955. 1955 was the year
Vivian died. In that same year he ended up marrying
Cecilia Suyat. They did have children two boys named
Thurgood Marshall Jr. and Jhon W. Marshall. They were
married from 1955 to 1993. Thoroughgood Marshall died
January 24, 1993 in Bethesda, Maryland in the United
States of America. He was a great man. He was a lawyer,
judge, jurist, and a politician. He worked hard doing
those jobs. That’s what made him great.
Marshall’s role in African
American history was one of the biggest roles in
history. He built a distinguishable career fighting for
the cause of civil rights and equal opportunity. Also he
was the first African-American to serve on the Supreme
Court’s liberal conscience toward the end of his career,
the last impassioned spokesman for a left-wing view on
such causes as affirmative action, getting rid of the
death penalty, and due process. Ebony dubbed Marshall
“the most important Black man of this century-a man who
rose higher than any Black person before him and who has
had more effect on Black lives than any other person,
Black or White.” That’s pretty amazing. Here are two
interesting facts about Thurgood. One is that he has an
award named after him called the Thurgood Marshall
Award. It recognizes similar long-term contributions by
other members of the legal profession to the,
advancement of the civil rights, civil liberties, and
human rights in the United States. Also another
interesting fact is that he won in the historical case:
Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka. Which ended
segregation in public schools in 1954. Which helped him
become Chief Counsel of the NAACP (National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People). Thurgood
Marshall was an amazing man and may he rest in peace.

July 16,1986 in Wichita Kansas. Barry Sanders is not
dead. Barry Sanders has no brother or sister and he is
not married. He went to O.K. state university,
stillwater, and Wichita Kansas high school. his
occupation is he likes to play football. Barry Sanders
is 44 years old and lives in Wichita Kansas. He was the
best running back. He had over 2,000 yards in his first
10 seasons. He forced the lions to bump up his pay.

also was a NCAA hall of famer. He was ranked top ten in
the NFL. When Barry Sanders left he was 1,457 yards

parents are dead. Barry Sanders for the lions from 1995
to 2001. Berry Sanders left because he wanted to be
traded but they would not trade him. Berry Sanders was a

First Lady of song, Queen of Jazz, and Lady Ella. Ella
went to a public school and received her musical
education. When she sang to sang to the glee club. Half
of the days when she was supposed to be at school she
would be at home at. Her step dad would beat her up. Her
real parents where Temper and william. As she got older
got older she started to love singing. Evenchley she
married Benny Korngay. Then shortly after that remarried
Ray Brown. Some people say she married a that she
secretly married someone. She ended up with her nephew
after her sister died. His name is Ray Brown Jr. Sadly
in 1995, June 15 Ella past away in Beverly hills at the
age of 78.
Ella lived an amazing life. She helped
for the civil rights movement. Ella made one thing
clear. That she thought that everybody should be treated
the same. At the age of 40. Ella was the first black
person to perform at the Copacabana. In the year of
1957. Ella got 20 awards. Once got 13 grammys. She sold
40,000,000 records. Some of them she recorded with
people like Billie holidays, Duke Ellingo and Louis
Armstrong. Her famous Quote is “It isn’t where you came
from it’s where you're going that counts”.
