The Onekama Consolidated
Schools gymnasium was alive last week, filled with spirited young
girls who were ready to improve their basketball skills and have a
good time. Each summer, the school hosts a basketball camp for
elementary and middle school girls, which is run by the Onekama High
School girls basketball team, along with their coach, Nathan
Bradford.
"My goal for the summer camp is to get girls excited to play
basketball and learn the fundamentals of the game,” explained
Bradford. “I hope that after their experience at camp, the girls
come away with new skills and an enthusiasm for basketball as a
sport."
The girls are divided into two age groups, K-4 and 5-8; each group
participates in a two-hour per day camp session. Members of the high
school Varsity and Junior Varsity teams serve as mentors, leading
the girls through exercises and drills, mixed in with fun games to
make the experience enjoyable and motivating.
The camp is made possible by the support of local sponsors: Townline
Unlimited Bargain Barn, Mathieu's Builders, and Pierport Graphics.
“The support from the community, together with the excitement of the
young girls and the older girls acting as positive role models,
makes the youth basketball camp a win-win for everyone involved,”
adds Bradford.
