Dear First
Grade Families,
This has been a very busy start to the new school year in first grade!
We have been playing games and completing activities to get to know one
another. We have been going over all the classroom rules and procedures.
All of us have learned to read a new story entitled Moonbear’s Books
by Frank Asch. We have even started our math series. Students were given
a couple new math tools and we practiced using them.
This letter came home in a Friday folder. Please look for the folder
each week so you can stay up to date with events and activities
happening in our classroom and around the school. Please return the
Friday folder to me each Monday morning.
In first grade we have one snack each afternoon after recess. Please
provide your child with a healthy snack for example, fruit, a granola
bar, or cheese and crackers. They are also allowed to keep a bottle of
water at their desk. Water bottles can be kept here all week and then
brought home to be washed over the weekend.
Questions to ask
your child this week are the following:
1)
Can you count by 1’s to 30 and then back down to
zero?
2)
Can you tell me some pairs of words that are
opposites?
3)
Do you remember the 3 classroom rules? |

Every few weeks we
will be walking to the public library. I know of many students who
already have a library card. If your child has a card please bring it to
school. For those who do not have a card yet I have stapled an orange
card to your letter. Please fill out the front and back of the card,
bring it back to school, and we will turn it into the librarian so your
child can get a card. I would like to try and schedule our first walk to
the library for Friday, September 30th. If you are available
to walk with us beginning at about 12:00 please let me know. I need at
least one adult
chaperone.
Our Open House is scheduled for next week Tuesday, September 13th
from 6-8 in the evening. I hope to see all of you there!
A few of you have asked about coming to the classroom to help. I will
have a sign-up sheet at Open House. To be in compliance with new
regulations, each volunteer needs to have a background check. At Open
House if you are interested in helping me in the classroom please sign
up and you can visit with Mrs. N (our Title One teacher). She will help
you with the preparations. I plan to develop a schedule and hope to have
it in place for you to begin visiting us in October.
Have a wonderful weekend! Enjoy the sunshine while it lasts!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
