Dear
First Grade Families,
We have continued practicing The Daily
5 reading program. This week students learned and practiced the read to
someone process. They learned how to check for understanding, and how to
be a good coach for their partner. When they read to someone they can
take turns reading the same book, they can read the same book together,
or they can take turns reading from different books.
During shared reading they learned to
read One Red Rooster. They made a number word book as well as a
color word flip book. We body spelled new words from the story and added
them to the word wall. We also added our friends names to the word wall.
Class books start coming home today. We will make many class books
throughout the year so that each student can take a book home. If you
see a class book come home in your child’s folder it is theirs to keep.
J
During
math this week we learned about tally marks. We also got the opportunity
to explore some more math tools we will use throughout the year.
Thank-you so much for all the donations from the wish list! There are
still items on the list that are needed so if you can donate any of the
items I would appreciate it. I would like to especially thank the
Showalter family who donated boxes for our Daily 5 books! The boxes will
work so much better than ziplock baggies. I really appreciate that!
We have
had way too many water bottle spills already this year! Please be sure
your child’s water bottle has a drink spout instead of a screw on cap
with a wide opening. I will not be able to allow any water to be kept at
desks unless it has a spout for drinking.
Dress
up days (Elementary):
Beginning the week of Sept. 19 the dress up days will be: Monday-PJ Day,
Tuesday-Inside Out Day, Wednesday- Hat Day, Thursday-Sports Day, and
Friday-Blue/Gold Day. Please count the total of students participating
each morning. |
Our library trip has been scheduled for
Thursday, October 6th. If you have not turned in your child’s
library card or the orange card I sent home to you please do so as soon
as possible so your child can get books on the 6th. I am
planning on having Carrie McQueen and Linda Showalter walk with us. If
you haven’t mentioned an interest in coming along, but would like to you
are more than welcome. We will leave school at 12:00.
I signed
up our class to decorate a wooden scarecrow that will be displayed
somewhere here in town. I would like to decorate it as a rockstar and
make a sign to hang from the neck that says first grade rocks! If you
have any clothing, a fun wig, an inflatable guitar, etc that you could
donate that would be great! Just remember that the scarecrow will be
outside in the elements.
Picture
day is next week Tuesday, September 27th. Please be sure to
bring your order form and check by then.
Have a
great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
