Dear First Grade Families,

We started The Daily 5 reading program this week! This is a new program I am piloting in my classroom. The program teaches literacy independence. Students were introduced to the read to self portion of the daily five. They learned about how to choose good-fit books and they learned the three ways to read a book.

During shared reading they learned to read Annie, Bea, and Chi Chi Delores A school day alphabet by Donna Maurer. Today we made a class book about the school activities we enjoy. We will make many class books throughout the year so that each student can take a book home. If you see a class book come home in your child’s folder it is theirs to keep. J

During math this week we continued to practice counting, number recognition, and we played a game called top-it.

I have included a wish list in the folder this week. If you are willing to donate any items from the list it would be greatly appreciated.

Next week is spirit week here at Onekama! Our dress-up days are as follows: Monday is pj day, Tuesday is inside out day, Wednesday is hat day, Thursday is sports day, and Friday is blue and gold day. On Friday before the football game we will have a parade and tailgate party. Details are provided in a letter from Mrs. Hagen.

Last week you received a survey, permission slip, and other notes about things your child needs at school. If you have not brought those items back to me yet please do so as soon as you can.

·  Dress up days (Elementary):  Beginning the week of Sept. 19 the dress up days will be: Monday-PJ Day, Tuesday-Inside Out Day, Wednesday- Hat Day, Thursday-Sports Day, and Friday-Blue/Gold Day.  Please count the total of students participating each morning.

In first grade we have one snack each afternoon after recess. Please provide your child with a healthy snack for example, fruit, a granola bar, or cheese and crackers. They are also allowed to keep a bottle of water at their desk. Water bottles can be kept here all week and then brought home to be washed over the weekend.

The wonderful librarian that welcomes us to the public library each year, Miss Jane is on vacation and returning next week. I will be contacting her to try and schedule a visit for Thursday, October 6th. If you are available to walk with us please let me know. We will plan to leave our classroom at 12:00.

I had a classroom volunteer sign-up out at Open House on Tuesday. If you were unable to come and would like to help in the classroom please let me know and I can add you to the schedule. I am going to try and develop a schedule by the second week of October.

          Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
