Dear First Grade Families,
I have been enjoying my time spent with students to work on their
writing. They are progressing well in their writing and most of them are
able to write at least two good sentences about a topic.
During shared reading time this week we completed a unit about the book
The Gingerbread Man
illustrated by Elfrieda. We completed a story map. We decorated
gingerbread boys and girls for the hallway display. We used gingerbread
man cut-outs to measure some things around the classroom. Today we made
gingerbread cookies!
During math this week we practiced measuring. We measured with a
tape measure, and we drew line segments with varied lengths. We learned
to tell time to the quarter hour. We discussed timelines and made a
timeline about the school year. We started our number writing books.
This week during Christmas around the world we “traveled” to Israel
to learn about Hannakuh. The kids colored the flag and played the
dreidel game |
I have received some personal care items for one of our Onekama
families. Please continue to bring in items. I will accept them until
next week Friday, Dec. 16th.
Thank-you so much to those of you who donated the items needed for our
gingerbread cookies. I really appreciate the help when trying to do fun
activities like baking!
Our school store day is Friday. If your child would like to buy items
from the store they should bring in about 1 or 2 dollars. Some of the
money earned from the store helps to pay for fieldtrips.
Questions to ask your child this week are the following:
-
Can you tell me about Hannakuh traditions?
-
Can you tell me about the dreidel game?
-
What tool do we use to measure the distance around an
object?
Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
