Harriet   Quimby
By Chloe D.

Harriet Quimby was the first lady to get a pilot’s license.  She was a very brave lady.  I think she was interesting because she was different than other girls.   She  also had great style and was known for her famous purple coat. She wore it because she was very theatrical and thought people would notice her more if she wore it. Harriet’s cause and belief was for women to have the same rights and opportunities as men. Harriet lived most of her life in California.   She was born in Arcadia.  Before she became a pilot, she was a photographer.  The time period that she did most of her work was in the early 1900’s. She inspired many more women to become pilots. One day she was flying with her flying buddy Willard. They went upside down and Willard fell out and then Harriet did.  Harriet was killed. Harriet was very inspiring because she proved that men aren’t the only people who can be pilots.

Sara Emma Edmonds
By Hanna H. and Ella .

Sara Emma Edmonds thought that women should have the right to do anything that men could do. Especially she thought women could fight in war. She started her life in December 1841 in New Brunswick, Canada. She lived on a farm with her family and was the fifth child. When she was sixteen her father  forced her to  marry. Sara did not like the idea like that she was getting married and her mother did not either, so she convinced a visitor down the street to help her run away . Then she decided to be a nurse in the Union army. When she was a nurse she dressed up as a man to in order to be a soldier.  She changed her name to Frank Thompson, and spied for the Union army. After that she settled down and had a family. Sara Emma Edmonds was a remarkable woman because she was the only woman of the Union Army.

Rosa Parks
by Ian W.

Rosa Parks was a Michigan woman. She worked for civil rights. Civil rights are rights of all people to be treated equally under the law.  Rosa Parks sat on a bus one day. A white man went to Rosa’s seat on the bus. The man said, “Get out of my seat.” Rosa side,  “no.” That day Rosa Parks went to jail.  She then gave speeches for civil rights.

Rosa Parks

Do you know who worked with Marten Luther King Jr?  Rosa Parks did! She won the Presidential Medal of Freedom.  She was arrested for sitting in the front of a bus, and when a white person wanted her seat she wouldn’t move.   She had already paid to ride the bus and the bus driver told her to go to the back. That was an example of unfair treatment. Rosa Parks believed that everyone should be treated fairly. I think Rosa Parks was awesome because she was really brave.

My lady is Sojourner Truth and she was an abolitionist and a suffragist. She did most of her work on the east coast and mid west. Her belief was that women should have the same rights as men. She also believed that people shouldn’t be slaves any more. She did most of her work in the mid 1800's. She increased awareness for her cause when she spoke to the people to end slavery and equal rights for women. ~Madeline C.

The Statue of Liberty represents friendship and freedom from oppression. Lady Liberty is located in Liberty Island. She welcomes people arriving to America. She was a gift from the people of France. ~By Griselda A.

The Statue of Liberty is a lot more than a monument. She is a living symbol of freedom to millions around the world. Did you know the 7 points on her crown represent the 7 seas and continents? At the feet of the Statue lie broken shackles of oppression and tyranny. She weighs 450,000 lbs! She is located on Liberty Island, in New York Harbor. Lady Liberty represents freedom for all. There is also a poem located at the base of the Statue by Emma Lazarus called The New Colossus.   Here is an excerpt from that poem, “I lift my lamp beside the golden door.”  ~By Jackson G.

Annie Clemenc
BY SAVANNAH L.

I am going to talk about Annie Clemenc. You might know her as  Big Annie. They are the same people. Isn't that cool? She was born in 1818 and died on 1954. She always wore dresses. She did most of her work in the 1913-1914. She is a good person but has a sad story. So I will tell you the sad story. She noticed that the miners were treated badly and she wanted to throw a party for all the miners’ hard work. All the miner bosses didn’t like the idea at all. They wanted to throw a prank on the miners and Big Annie.  The  prank didn't turn out so good.  The miner bosses yelled “Fire”  into the party, and all of the people started running and all the people started pushing and kicking and piling on top of each other. Many women, men, and children died and a few people lived.

When she marched, she always held up the American flag.  One day the bosses came out and threatened to kill her, and she said “You can shoot me and if I die, this flag will die with me. “  Don't you think she’s strong? So she always held up the flag. That's how parents are and relatives have working rights.

Harriet Quimby
by Eleanor S.

Harriet Quimby was the first woman to obtain a pilot’s license. She was born May 11th 1875. She was born in Arcadia, MI and moved to San Francisco. She learned to fly at the Moisant School of  Aviation on Long island. One of the things I like about Harriet Quimby is her purple flying suit. Part of the reason she wore her purple flying suit is because when she was young she wanted to be an actress. She was very theatrical. Before she became a pilot she was a photographer. I think it would be cool to be a photographer. She inspired other women to fly planes. Harriet died by
falling out of a plane. Her flying buddy Willard fell out of the plane then Harriet fell because she wasn’t wearing a seatbelt.. I truly do adore Harriet Quimby because she was inspiring.
