5th Grade Social Studies 4th Quarter Outline

Public Discourse

  • Identify contemporary public issues related to the U.S. Constitution

  • Use graphic data and other sources to analyze information about a contemporary public
    issue related to the U.S. Constitution

  • Compose a short essay expressing a position on a contemporary public policy issue
    related to the Constitution and justify the position with a reasoned argument.

 

The U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights

  • Describe the rights found in the First, Second, Third, and Fourth Amendments to the United States Constitution. 
  • Describe the concern that some people had about individual rights and why the inclusion of a Bill of Rights was needed for ratification.
  • Give reasons why the Framers wanted to limit the power of government.

 

4th Grade Social Studies 4rd Quarter Outline

 Civics and Government

  • Identify the answers to the following questions:
  • What does government do?

  • What are the basic values and principles of American democracy?

  • What is the relationship of the United States to other nations?  

  • What are the roles of the citizen in American democracy?

 

  • Define popular sovereignty, rule of law, checks and balances, separation of powers, and individual rights
  • Describe the structure of American government and how it functions to serve citizens
  • Explain rights and responsibilities of citizenship
  • Describe and act in ways that citizens can work together to promote values and principles of American democracy

  • Create a timeline of early Michigan history

 Government

  • Distinguish between the roles of state and local government
  • Identify goods and services provided  by state government in Michigan  and describe how they are funded. 
  • Describe the purpose of the Michigan Constitution

 Economics

  • Describe how entrepreneurs combine natural, human, and capital resources to produce goods and service in Michigan. 
  • Analyze how Michigan’s location and natural resources influence economic development.
