My class went to
Hartwick Pines on Wednesday, May 16, 2012. We started the
day by getting on the bus at 9:00 a.m. A lot of people
brought their DS's to play. When we got to Hartwick Pines,
we got off the bus and ate lunch. Then we got back on the
bus and went to play Skins and Skulls with our teacher
Craig. Then we went on a trail and looked at trees with our
teacher Marissa. There was a tree that got hit by lightning,
but was still alive. We went to a chapel that had a cross on
the window. We went to a logging camp and we saw lots of
machines. There were cranes, wagons, and sleds. All of these
needed to be pulled by horses. The loggers used to have 2-3
people sleep in a bed at night in the winter because it was
so cold. There were sometimes bedbugs in the beds. Sometimes
people used to try to steal the logs. The loggers would put
sawdust and sand on the trails to try to slow down the
thieves. The loggers that would do this were called road
monkeys. We went into another house and we saw some more
logging equipment. There were saws, axes, and other things.
There was a replica of how they would work to get the wood
to other places. After this, we got back on the bus and went
to McDonalds to eat, and then got on the bus for the last
time to go home. We got back at 6:30 p.m. I had a blast at
Hartwick Pines!

I got out of the
car and went to go eat my lunch. When I was done I got up to
go to the play ground. "Time to get on the bus," Mrs.
Bennett said after a while. When I got on the bus I sat next
to Ella and Colleen. Two minutes later we where at the Skins
& Skulls presentation. The guy that was running the
presentation name was Craig. Craig was a funny guy! We
played a game that you hold out you hands and you would
guess what animal it was. 30 minutes later a girl named
Marissa took us on a tour of the woods. She talked about
Monarch (the biggest tree in the forest), snag (a tree that
is standing up but dead), and heart rot (a disease that rots
out the insides). After a while we come across an old
chapel. In side it had a prayer. A little while longer there
was a logging camp/museum. Hiedi told us about all the jobs
like cooks, timber men, road monkeys, and barn boy. Finely
we want to the gift shop. Sadly after that we had to go
home. I will never forget my trip to Hartwick Pines.
