On Friday, March 25, Onekama Elementary
School students had a special guest: Sergeant Detective Jim Doering.
For the past eleven years, Doering has been a detective for the
Manistee County Sheriff's office. His visit at the school was part
of Onekama School’s “March Mystery Madness,” their theme for March
is Reading Month.
Sergeant Detective Doering gave the
students insight into the life of a real detective. This information
will be helpful to the students as they write their own mystery
stories in their classrooms.
Doering explained the steps taken by a
detective to solve a crime, including securing the crime scene,
taking pictures, recording the witnesses, collecting the evidence,
and collecting fingerprints and/or footprints. The students enjoyed
his visit and had plenty of questions about his experience.
“If he needs to collect fingerprints, then
he uses special fingerprint dust,” explained Onekama third grade
student Luke Mauntler. “Then, he uses clear tape to lift the prints
and send it to a crime lab. If he needs to collect footprints, then
he sprays hairspray and pours a special mixture into the footprints.
After that, he can make a list of suspects.”
Following Doering’s presentation, students
returned to their classrooms full of new knowledge and ready to put
their pencils – and their imaginations – to work.
