 Dear First Grade Families,

This week during our shared reading time we learned to read the story When this box is full by Patricia Lillie. We made a four seasons flip book. We learned new words to add to our word wall We made a class book about collections, and made some fall colored leaves for our classroom tree. We will be making enough class books for everyone to take one home and keep as a memory of the class. If you see one of our books come home it is yours to keep.

In math this week we have continued our counting practice. We began solving addition number stories. We played a counting game. We learned about how to use the calculator, and we learned about how numbers are everywhere and we need and use them everyday.

This week was our first week participating in literacy work stations. I developed five different stations for your child to visit and complete a specific task. They visit one station per day and by the end of the week they are done with all five. While they are working at their assigned station I work with guided reading groups. This week I was testing to determine reading levels. Next week I will have all my groups established and I will begin meeting with groups to work on reading strategies and comprehension.

I must apologize for Wednesday night’s homework. I forgot to write an a in one of the spaces. ”Kinda” hard to make words without a vowel! Sorry about that.

Next week is spirit week. The children will be allowed to dress to a certain theme everyday. The weekly schedule on how to dress came home in the folder today. Please keep it as a reference for the week. The class with the most participants will receive a wooden Onekama Portagers O as a prize to keep in the classroom for the year. Please join us Friday afternoon for the homecoming parade and tailgate party. More information and a permission slip for the parade came home today too.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      Can you count backwards starting at 110 and counting back to 80?

2)     Can you use the following words in a sentence? You, for, not

3)      Can you tell me a word that rhymes with clock? A word that rhymes with pan?

 Have a good weekend
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
