Dear First Grade Families,

We completed our first theme test this week. Theme tests help determine how your child is doing in reading fluency, reading comprehension, phonics and decoding, and writing. I will work on grading the tests next week so they will come home to you next Friday.

In math this week we learned about the penny and nickel. We practiced counting pennies and nickels alone and together. We played a penny nickel exchange game, and we learned how to write and solve number models.

We completed our first health unit this week. We learned about all the ways we can keep our bodies healthy. We learned how to cover our cough and sneeze. We got to see what happens to our teeth if we don’t take care of them by looking at some eggs that were soaking in different liquids. Have your child tell you about this.

I haven’t been feeling well so I had to cancel our walk to the public library for today. I stayed home to rest up for next week.

We will be walking to the Onekama Fire Department to learn about fire safety on Thursday, October 28th. We will leave school at about 11:40 and we will return around 1:30. If you are available to join us for this fieldtrip please let me know.

We should be all set for our Halloween party next Friday, Oct. 29th. I will have the kids begin getting into their costumes around 12:00. If you are available to help, feel free to come join us at 12:00. If your child’s costume has a weapon please leave the weapon at home.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

  1. How much is a penny worth? How much is a nickel worth?

  2. What are some things we can do to stay healthy?

  3. Can you write a number model for the following number story?

  • I had 3 pencils. My friend gave me 2 more pencils. How many pencils do I have now?

  • Bring out the cold weather clothing! I think our warm days are quickly leaving us!

I hope you all have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
