 Dear First Grade Families,

This week during shared reading we learned to read the story My Five Senses by Margaret Miller. We made a 5 senses book and read together, we learned some new words to put on our word wall, we used one sense at a time to play a few games, and today we used all our senses to make applesauce!

In math this week we learned about the thermometer and we are now recording the temperature each day during calendar. We learned 4 ways to solve addition number stories and made a number story class book.  We completed our first progress check. Graded tests came home today. You will see two copies of the test. I make a copy of the tests so I can grade them, but also give your child the opportunity to erase and fix any mistakes when we go over the test as a class. If your child had difficulty with any of the concepts on the test please practice at home. Please read the letter that explains concepts your child will be learning in Unit 2.

Homework will begin on Monday, October 4th as I stated in last week’s letter. Please make sure your child has a 2-pocket folder for their homework. Please read over the homework expectations so you know and understand our homework routine. If you have any questions please let me know.

I have received a few things from my wish list. I will still accept any items you are willing to donate. I have most everything we will need for our Halloween party except a drink and some healthy snacks. If you are willing to bring any items for snack time please let me know.

We will be walking to the fire department to be a part of a fire safety presentation on Thursday, October 28th. We will be leaving by 12:00. If you are available to walk down there with us please let me know.

Mrs. Hrachovina would like you to know that our day for checking out books will be Tuesday. Please look for library books every Tuesday. Your child can enjoy these books for the week. Please be sure to return them by the following Tuesday so they can get new books.

I needed to make some changes to the volunteer schedule. If you are signed up to help in our classroom you received a new schedule today.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      What does a thermometer measure?

2)     Can you tell me 1 way to solve an addition number story?

3)      Can you use the following words in a sentence? We, have, see

Have a good weekend!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
