Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

This week during our shared reading time the first graders learned to read Something from Nothing by Pheobe Gilman. They completed a special cutting activity, continued practicing their paragraph writing with the help of a graphic organizer. They also sequenced the story with pictures and words to help them retell they important parts of the story. Kindergarten learned two new poems. They learned to read a short a word poem and a long a word poem. They made a list of short and long a words.

In math this week the first graders learned about median and range and figured out the median and range for a graph we made about class calculator counts. We all learned about the dollar and determined how many of each coin it takes to make a dollar. The kindergarteners worked on addition and subtraction fact books.

Our fieldtrip to Moomer’s will be Friday, May 20th. Moomer’s is an ice cream factory in Traverse City. They show us all the steps it takes to make ice cream beginning with how the cows are milked and ending with the chance to choose our own type of ice cream to eat! We will leave school at about 8:15 and return at about 2:30. Anyone is welcome to join us for this very fun experience. The cost will be about $5.00 per person. I will let you know for sure what your cost will be once I hear back from our P.T.O.

Our buddy reading beach party will be on Friday, May 27th. We will leave school just before 11:00 and walk to the Onekama Village Park to eat lunch and enjoy the outdoors together for the day. Anyone is welcome to join us.

Our good behavior field day is scheduled for Wednesday, June 1st (rain day June 2nd). You are welcome to join us on this day too!

This week was our last week for first grade homework. The kids have many activities after school right now and also want to be outside as much as possible. However, please continue reading, practicing math flashcards and practicing sight words.

We walked to the library today. It will be our last trip to the library this year. Please be sure to return your books by Friday, May 27th.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

First grade

1)     How many pennies does it take to make 1 dollar? How many nickels? How many dimes? How many quarters?

Kindergarten

1)     Can you tell me a short a sound word? A long a sound word?

Have a great weekend! I sure hop it is sunny and a bit warmer!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
