Dear
Kindergarten and First Grade Families,
Kindergarten and first grade started a geography unit this week. The
kindergarten students began making a book about where they live. They
made a map of their room, a picture of their house with their address, a
picture of the city of Manistee and a picture of our state. The first
graders learned similarities and differences between maps and globes.
They learned about a compass rose and the direction words. They
practiced reading a map using a compass rose. They also read a book
about Michigan and wrote about why they like living here.
In math this week we completed a whole class unit on fractions.
Kindergarten made a fraction book and read their book. First graders
practiced sharing varied amounts of pennies equally.
Our fieldtrip to Moomer’s will be Friday, May 20th. Moomer’s
is an ice cream factory in Traverse City. They show us all the steps it
takes to make ice cream beginning with how the cows are milked and
ending with the chance to choose our own type of ice cream to eat! We
will leave school at about 8:15 and return at about 2:30. Anyone is
welcome to join us for this very fun experience. The cost is $4.00 per
person. Please fill-out and return the attached note with your check
(made out to Moomer’s) or cash by next week Wednesday, May 18th.
If you would like your child to have a lunch from school for that day
please fill-out and return the field trip lunch menu form.
