Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

This week during shared reading time the first graders learned to read the story The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins. They completed a story map, learned about contractions and practiced abc order. The kindergarteners made an alphabet book.

First graders completed their unit 4 checking progress. Graded tests came home today. They all did very well! Kindergarteners were introduced to the pattern block shapes hexagon, trapezoid, and rhombus.

A pink class list came home today. Please use it for addressing Valentines. Our Valentine’s Day party will be on Monday, February 14th. It will only be for the last hour of our day. When the kids come in from recess we will have our snack, pass out valentines and play some games. When the kindergarteners were in Mr. K’s class some parents signed up to help. From that list I have Jay & Deanna Osga helping in the classroom, Katie Revolt bringing plates and cups, Mrs. Corey bringing milk, Mrs. Niederstadt bringing rice krispie treats, and Mrs. Petrosky bringing in a snack. If there are any first grade parents that would be willing to provide a couple more little snack type foods like cheese and crackers or grapes that would be great!

First grade spelling tests were graded and sent home today. If your child spelled all six of their words correct they received a pack of Smarties! If any of their words were misspelled those words will be on next week’s list.

There will be another teacher in-service on Monday, January 31st. There will be no school for students on that day.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

            Kindergarten

1)     Can you tell me the names of the shapes you learned in math this week?

2)     Can you tell me about the alphabet book pages you made?

First Grade

1)     Can you use the following contractions on a sentence? It’s, We’ll, She’s, He’s

2)     Can you solve the following subtraction problems? 10-5=, 6-3=, 9-1=

Have a nice weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
