Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

We were able to combine shared reading this week and integrate some science with the book The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The first graders learned the life cycle of the caterpillar. The kindergarteners learned about living and non-living things, what living things need, and what skin coverings different animals have. We even reviewed symmetry by looking at the design on the butterfly wings.

I think that everyone received their new improved 100th day shirts. If I forgot you please let me know. If you still have the old shirt we would like it back. The screen printer asked that we return all the misprinted shirts.

Information about our animal research project came home today. If you have any questions please let me know. This began years ago as a first grade project. I have done it with Kindergarteners in the past. I modified the kindergarten requirements so it will be easier for them to accomplish.

Once all the projects are completed and have been handed in we will be working with an online storybook making company to put all the research into a book. Your child will be able to read their book at Young Author’s night in April. I am currently waiting for some forms from the company. Hopefully I will get them early next week so you can get them and sign the forms. In order for your child’s free book to be printed I will need the company form signed and returned.

We walked to the public library today. If your child brought books home they will be due on Friday, Mar. 18th.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

Kindergarten

  1.  Can you name a living thing? A non-living thing?

  2. What do living things need?

First grade

  1. Can you use the following words in a sentence? Much, any, than, that

  2. Can you tell me the 4 stages in the life cycle of a caterpillar?

Have a nice weekend!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
