Dear
Kindergarten and First Grade Families,
During our shared reading time this week first grade students learned to
read On top of spaghetti. Kindergarten students learned and
practiced the letters Ll, Nn, Qq, and Ss.
In
math this week the first graders were introduced to the dime and its
value. They practiced counting dimes, nickels, and pennies. The
kindergarteners practiced writing the numbers 12, 13, and 14, and they
made a December calendar. Both grades learned about data collection and
we made a graph to show our favorite colors.
We
started our Christmas around the world unit this week. We made a list of
U.S. Christmas traditions. Students made passports. We “traveled” to
China and located it on a map. We made a list of China Christmas
traditions, and we made paper chains and lanterns to use as decorations
in our room.
Our holiday music program will be in our cafetorium on Wednesday, Dec.
15th. A flyer with all the details came home to you today.
Our school store day is Friday. If your child would like to purchase
items from the school store they may bring some money on Friday’s. A
couple dollars is enough for your child to be able to make a purchase.
We
will be walking to the public library next week Friday, Dec. 10th.
We will be making a Christmas craft as well as checking out more books.
Please be sure your child’s public library books are returned as soon as
possible.
First grade students received addition flashcards today. Please practice
the facts at home. Your child has them at school too and will also get
practice here at school.

I
have updated my December wish list. Please look it over and if you can
donate any of the items I would really appreciate it.
The snow has arrived! Please be sure your child comes to school each day
with a coat, snowpants, boots, hat, and gloves. I would suggest
providing them with 2 pairs of gloves so if one gets wet they have an
extra pair for the next recess.
Next week we will be doing a reading unit with the story The
Gingerbread Man by Paul Galdone. We will complete the activities in
this unit along with Mrs. Loucks’ class. If anyone would like to try
making gingerbread playdough for us that would be great. I have included
the recipe in each child’s folder.
