Dear
Kindergarten and First Grade Families,
During shared reading this week the kindergarteners learned and
practiced the letter Vv. They learned and practiced writing the letters
Tt, Uu, and Vv. The first graders learned to read The Foot Book
by Dr. Seuss. They were able to find the rhyming words in the book. We
also discovered the opposites in the book and compared them to the
opposites in another book they learned to read this year called
Moonbear’s books.
We were very busy with our Christmas around the world unit this week. We
talked about the traditions in Mexico, completed a Spanish Christmas
words book, and we played some maracas while learning to sing Feliz
Navidad. We also talked about the celebration in Africa called Kwaanza.
We learned about the Kinara, the candle holder they use to hold the
seven candles representing the seven days and principles of Kwanzaa. Our
last country to learn was Israel. We talked about Hanukkah and the
menorah, and we played the dreidel game.
In math this week both grades completed an introduction to measurement.
They measured with different body parts first and we talked about how
this would not be a good way to measure. Then they had the opportunity
to measure objects with a 12 inch ruler.

Next week we will be reading my favorite Christmas story, The Polar
Express, and completing a variety of activities together. At the end
of the day on Monday we will be acting out the story. Please have
your child wear pajamas on Monday.
On Tuesday we will be watching the movie The Polar Express at the
Garden Theatre in Frankfort. We will be leaving school at 8:15 and we
will return at 11:45. Please be sure your child is here on time (by
8:00) and ready to go so we can board the buses on time.
Our school store day is Friday. If your child would like to make a
purchase from our school store please send them to school with some
money on Fridays.
I will not be at school on Tuesday, Jan. 4th. We will be
traveling home from Florida so I wanted an extra travel day just in
case.
I wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Enjoy the holidays
with your family.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
