Dear
Kindergarten and First Grade Families,
This week during our shared reading time the first graders
learned to read If the dinosaurs came back by Bernard Most. They
wrote about how a dinosaur might help them, learned dinosaur facts and
how to read the different dinosaur names, and they made a class book.
The kindergarten students put their Crayons poem into book form
and practiced reading their finished book. They learned a new poem
about spring and made spring pictures.
In math this week we all learned about polygons and had the
opportunity to make polygons with pipe cleaners and straws. The
kindergarten students learned how to exchange coins and played a
nickel/penny exchange game. First graders practiced solving one-step
word problems as well as place value. Kindergarten students practiced
measuring to the nearest inch with a ruler.
A conference schedule came home to all of you today. If you are
not signed up to meet with me and talk about your child’s progress
please choose one of the available times and return the schedule to me.
The first graders completed their 90 word spelling test this
week. You will receive their results during your conference time
Next week the first graders will be taking the Iowa Test of the
Basic Skills. This is a standardized test that will determine your
child’s academic progress in the areas of reading and math.
We had an ice cream party to celebrate our month of reading. I
was so impressed with how much all the kids were reading at home. Our
class as a whole read 10,231 minutes!
I hope you enjoy the warmer temperatures this weekend!
Questions to ask your child this week are the following:
1)
Can you name a characteristic of a polygon?
2)
Can you name 3 polygons?
3)
How high can you count by 10’s? (Kindergarten should be able to
go to at least 110, First grade should be trying to get to 500)
Sincerely,
Mrs.
Lyman
