Dear Kindergarten and First Grade Families,

This week during our shared reading time the first graders learned to read George Shrinks  by William Joyce. They practiced writing using the transitional words first, next, then, and last. They wrote a how to using the transitional words and I had to do the task while they read their directions. It taught us about the importance of using details in our writing! J The kindergarten students continued practicing their Spring poem and they put it into book for to read to me. We made a graph to see how many of us liked the Spring season, and then we wrote about whether or not we like Spring and why.

In math this week the first graders learned about fact families and were given fact triangles to cut out and use for practicing math facts. Today they completed their unit 7 checking progress. I skipped over unit 6 so I could teach both grades their geometry targets. We will go back to unit 6 next week. Kindergarten learned how to solve comparison number stories with square counters. They also practiced counting dimes, nickels, and pennies by playing a coin exchange game.

We have continued our properties of matter science unit this week. We went outside and measured two puddles on two

I apologize for not getting the spelling results prepared for conferences. I will have more time next week to get the results recorded and make the graphs. Please look for everything in Friday folders next week.

First graders finished their Iowa Test of the Basic Skills yesterday. It was a long test for them, but they handled it well.

Next week we will be back to normal and ready to participate in guided reading and literacy work stations. We will have a science station beginning next week. If you have anything that would be fun and interesting for the students to observe and write about please send it in. We would appreciate having as much as possible so they can make choices as to what they would like to observe each week.

Enjoy the weekend!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)     Can you tell me what happened to the water from the playground puddles?

2)  What did you like best about meeting Jonathan Rand?

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
