STOP, DROP, AND LEARN!
Onekama Elementary first grade students spent
the afternoon of October 28 at the Onekama Township Fire Department. The
class, under the direction of teacher Kelly Lyman, visited the station
in order to learn about fire safety.
Firefighters Brett Mathieu
and Jeff Wisniski spoke to the class about what to do in the case of a
house fire, and what actions to take to prevent the start of fires.
Wisniski dressed in full gear to show students what a firefighter who
has entered their house to help them would look like. |
“Sometimes kids can get
scared when they see a firefighter in his mask coming towards them, and
they may want to hide,” Mathieu told the students. “Don’t be frightened
when you see us, because we’re there to help you.” To that, first grader
Olivia D. responded, “You guys are our best friends.”
The members of the Onekama
Fire Department are proud of their role as “best friends” to the
community in times of emergency. By spreading the message of fire safety
to Onekama’s youth, they are working to keep the community protected in
the future. |
