Chick or Alien?

By Madison

This year in Mr. K’s class the kindergarten hatched eggs. Jesse is a student in Mr. K’s class.

The class got their amazing eggs from Mr. Zupin. Jesse said when he first saw the eggs he thought they were cool, amazing, like aliens, but not pretty. He also said the eggs were brown and white. The first thing the Kindergarten did was put the eggs in the incubator which keeps the eggs warm. Jesse said that they that they had to write O’s and X’s to know when to flip them over. He also said that they had to flip them over a lot, about 45 Times! They usually only flip them over 3 to 4 times a day though. They also had to do candling Jesse told me. candling is when you put a egg on a cylinder type of thing to see what’s in the egg. Jesse said he saw a big dot and a little dot too. He seemed very facinated about the chicks. Chicks also grow inside the egg. How do they do this you ask? Well, Jesse said they, “ Drunk all the yoke to make it grow.” That’s amazing how they can do that!

That’s not all what happens. the chick obviously has to hatch! Jesse said that it takes a really long time. It usually takes 21 days to hatch. Jesse felt really happy and excited when they hatched. Chicks also have coins in their water. Many people don’t know that, but Mr. K’s class does! They put coins in the chicks’ water so they can see where it is. They also have food in their shelter of course which is crushed up corn and seed. Jesse also said his favorite part about the chicks was, “Holding them, they felt tickley. My favorite one was the white one, the small white one.” Sounds like a lot of fun!

Mr. K’s class had a fun, edacational expierience. I hope the next Kindergarten class does too!

Egg Hatching

By Sophie

For many years, Mr. K’s class has been hatching chicks. Jesse is a student in Mr. K’s class.

Jesse said, “Mr.  Zupin gave the class the eggs”. The eggs were cool, amazing and like aliens! They were also soft but not pretty. Jesse said, “The eggs were brown, and white”. The first thing they had to do was put them in the incubator, then write and draw about them. They also had to draw X’s and O’s on the eggs to know which side to flip them over on. Jesse said, “they had to flip over the eggs and put water on them”. The incubator warms the chicks. They also did candling, which is when you put the egg in light and you get to see what is in the egg. Jesse saw a small black dot and a big black dot. The chicks grew in the egg from drinking all the yoke from the egg!

Hatching eggs took quite a while, Jesse said, “It took a very long time”. When the eggs hatched Jesse felt happy, and excited, one hatched before all the others! The class needed to put coins in the water so the chicks can see where the water is, but as the chicks get older they can take the coins out. Jesse said, “They feed the chicks crumbled things”. Jesse’s favorite part was holding the baby chicks,t hey tickled his hand! Jesse’s favorite was a white chick.

Hatching chicks is a great experience for the kindergarten class. Jesse really enjoyed it.

One Little White Egg

By Elizabeth

Every year Mr.K tries to do an egg project with his Kindergartner's. Connor is one of Mr.K’s young 5’s.

Mr. Zupin brought in the eggs for the class. Connor was so happy to see the eggs. Only one egg was white this year. The first thing they did with the eggs was look at then in the incubator. Mr. Zupin helped the class put water in the incubator so the eggs get softer and it is easier  to peck the egg shell open. The class turns the eggs four times a day. The incubator keeps the eggs warm so they don’t die. Candling is a lite bulb in a cylinder type thing to see inside the shell! Connor says, “ YEAH!, it was like a little shadow and he was moving, there was a small dot and I think it was an eye!” He the ate yoke and the red lines in the egg are like straws so they get the yoke to them.

It took many days for the eggs to hatch. Connor said, “ I felt happy when I saw the hole in the egg shell, I saw the chicks beek open the shell, but we didn’t get to see the chicks hatch because the power went out in the storm.” Mr. Zupin put coins in the water and food because the chicks see the reflection and so they know where their food and water is. The baby chicks eat food that is like pellets. Connor liked the chicks A LOT!

Mr.K’s class likes the project. It is a educational project too.

Once a year Mr K’s class hatches baby chicks. Sawyer was one of the students that got to watch the chicks grow. When Sawyer first saw the eggs he thought they were cool. There was white and brown eggs. When Sawyers class got the egg the first thing that they did was put them in an incubator. Then  they put X’s and O’s on them. The reason of that is to keep track of the days. You would have to turn them over once a day to keep them warm. The incubator would heat the eggs like a mother hen said Sawyer. Sawyer said candling is when you get a cereal bowl like thing and then put a flash light under it. Sawyer saw a little black dot.

Look i see a leg it’s hatching. Quack! Quack! The chicks are hatching. The wait is over and it only toke 21 days. When Sawyer saw the chicks he was excited because he had never seen them hatch before and he thought they were cool. Mr K’s class would put pennies in the water and food so the chicks could see them. Sawyer said the chicks food is little pebbles. The thing Sawyer liked the most is holding the chicks.
