Schedule for Mr. Mauntler's Second Grade Class

October 15, 2010

A Look Back and Ahead

In Language Arts this week we started our 2nd theme, “Be a Nature Detective”. We worked on topic/main idea/supporting details, K.W.L. (what I know, want to know, learned), and looking at details. We will be working on these skills for the rest of the theme and also working on summarizing and comparing/contrasting.

I have been working with guided reading groups when I can. We’ve focused primarily on learning the vowels or vowel rules…

In Math we worked on solving number grid puzzles, place value, and we took our unit 1 review. For the unit reviews, I read each problem to the children and give them time to complete each problem where appropriate.

We have started unit 2. This unit deals primarily with addition and subtraction- facts, number stories, and fact families.

Please help remind your child to study their flashcards 2-4 times per week (as needed) so he/she can move to the next level. Mrs. N. or Mrs. Petrosky will try to test each student at least once a week. When the children have their facts memorized, they will be asked to move to the next level.

We finished learning about communities this week in Social Studies. We ended our unit by looking at the relationships between man-made objects and natural elements of our society. We have started our “Plants” unit. We will be taking notes and working with plants to investigate the kinds, parts, and life/life cycles of plants.

We added more words to our spelling dictionaries this week. We now have enough to start having tests! I will put their assignments on the homework for you to know when their test and study times are. Please note that I give them at least two opportunities here at school to study and at least one study night at home.

PLEASE remember to check out our website!
