Playing a New Dice Game in Math

"We learned how to use dice to create math problems today. We played with partners and had a great time."

Dice Games

Game 1 – Add the Dice

·      You will need two pairs of dice, a piece of paper, and a pencil.

1.    Both players roll a pair of dice.

2.   Both players then write addition problems using the numbers rolled on their dice.

3.    The player with the largest sum (and a correct answer) writes his/her name down.

4.   The first player to have his/her name written ten times wins.

An example might look like this: Player one rolls a 3 and a 5. Player two rolls a 1 and a 6. The paper would look like this (if you set it up this way),

Player 1          Player 2                 winner

3 + 5= 8          1 + 6= 7               Player one’s

                                                                      name

Later in the year, two (differently colored) pairs of dice can be used to add or subtract double-digit numbers.

Game 2 – Cross Out the Numbers

·      You will need 2 dice, 2 pieces of paper, and 2 pencils.

1.    Number the papers from 2 – 12.

2.   Player one rolls the dice, adds up the total, and crosses out any numbers on her/his paper (2 – 12) that add up to the sum of the dice and the sum of the dice. The players may or may not use the numbers on the dice.

3.   Continue until all the numbers are crossed out or no more numbers can be used.

4.   The player with the fewest numbers left on his/her paper wins.

An example may look like this: Player one rolls a 4 and a 5, adding to 9. He or she may then cross out 3, 6, and 9 on his/her paper. Or she/he may cross out 2, 4, 3, and 9. *You may make the rule that you can’t use the numbers on the dice. I would recommend not to mention it for the first few times through to see if he/she uses other numbers.
