Mrs. Niederstadt's Parent Letter

September 25, 2009

Dear Parents,

In this week’s Friday Folder, some of your child’s work was graded with letter grades.  There are four grades given, they are S+=Achieved, S=Progressing Successfully, S-=Beginning to Develop and U=Experiencing Difficulty. Some papers are stamped with “The Wall of Fame.”  These papers are the best of the best, because they have included correct answers, best writing, best coloring, no backward letters or numbers and the date.  If your child has this stamped on one of his/her papers, then congratulate him/her on a job well done.

Also included in your child’s folder are several writing samples: My Family, My House, and Seasons.  Each writing assignment begins with a mini-lesson.  I show my example on the overhead, talk about my drawing, and then move on to my words or sentence.  I talk about capital letters, finger spaces and periods at the end of a sentence.  Right now I am trying to get them comfortable with the writing process; I have not assigned a number of sentences yet.  Within the next few weeks, students will need to write two sentences on lined paper.   Please note all the work has been done with full support.  I have been spelling words to them, but soon students will learn to use our word wall, picture dictionary and stretch out the unknown word.  I do encourage inventive spelling.  As time goes on, we will start our spelling program in January.

A few lunch notes for this year.  Our school offers breakfast in the morning.  If your child is interested, then the cost is $1.25.  Students do not need to wait in the line outside of the building; they are able to enter the building by the superintendent’s office.  As you know lunch is available for $2.25.  The menu is limited this year due to our construction.  Students have one choice for hot lunch.  We look forward to more choices in our new facility.  Milk is $.50.  On Fridays students are able to purchase a variety of items for 50 cents each such as ice cream cups, fruit snacks, and cookies.  Go-Gurts are available for 50 cents daily.

The first Friday of every month we will participate in the school store.  Our first visit will be October 2nd.  It’s located in the display case by the Media Center (library).  It contains pens, pencils, markers, highlighters, notebooks, folders, etc.  Items range from $.50 to $2.50.  It’s sponsored by our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO).  They use the profits to sponsor our visits to local theaters, March is Reading month activities, treats for MEAP week, Good Behavior Ski Day, Good Behavior Field Day, field trips, and much more.  If there is a parent interested in volunteering to help us with school store once a month, then please let me know.

As you may have noticed by our last Friday Folder, I’ve recruited help from the class.  I used to stuff them by myself, but it takes too much of my preparation time.  Now students help me pass out papers and put them into their own Friday Folder.  Students learn to read each others’ names plus this is a great time saving for me.  Students are supposed to check each paper before putting it into their folder, but some papers do get into the wrong folder.  If you get another student’s paper, then please send it to school in your child’s folder.   I’ll be sure it gets to the right owner.

The following are dates that you may want to add to your calendar:
