Dear Parents,

Welcome back!  I hope you and your family are feeling well.  This week your child will take our first theme test.  This test assesses your child’s comprehension, phonics/decoding, and writing.  This is one of four theme tests to be taken this year.  It is one of the tools used to measure your child’s reading abilities.  During parent-teacher conferences, I will review your child’s results with you.

Our theme test will begin on Tuesday and should be completed by Thursday.  Please be sure that your child is to school on time and has had a good breakfast.  Parent volunteers will have this week off due to testing.

This will be a busy week.  Our enrichment schedule will be different this week.  Please find the enclosed schedule.  Today we went to the Onekama Village Fire Department.  On Thursday we will walk to the Onekama Public Library.  Our Halloween party is Friday from 11:45 to 3:00.  Your child is invited to wear his/her costume all day.  If your child has a weapon as part of his/her costume, it needs to stay at home.  We need several items to make our holiday crafts: sandwich-sized ziploc bags, black piper cleaners (80), Tootsie pops (20), and large block pom poms (20).

Enclosed is a letter about our ski club program.  This is a fun and cost-effective way to get your child skiing at Crystal Mountain.  Each ski night begins with a ski lesson.  Please take a few minutes to look over the letter.

Beginning November 1st, we will start a computerized lunch program, Meal Magic.  On the computer system will be each student’s name and picture (from school pictures).  As the elementary students walk through the line, the lunch personal will touch the picture of each student as s/he walks through the line.  This will deduct money from your child’s account to pay for his/her lunch.  Also it should help move the students through the line quicker.  In the middle and high school, the students will have a four-digit code to enter to pay for their lunches.  In order for this system to work smoothly, you’ll need to pre-pay for your child’s lunch as many of you do already.  Each Monday please be sure to send lunch money in with your child.  All lunch money should be in an envelope or plastic bag with your child’s name and amount written on the outside.  As with any new system, your patience is appreciated as we work through any “kinks.”  Also I would send checks rather than cash.  Checks are a good way to keep records.  As more information is available, I’ll keep you posted.

Each week Mrs. Hagen sends out an email regarding all the notes and dates on Fridays. If you would like to receive this email, then please feel free to contact her at ghagen@manistee.org.
