Mrs. Niederstadt's Weekly Parent Letter
for
November 6, 2009

Dear Parents,

Enclosed is your child’s last math test.  I gave less support on this test.  The first page is a copy of your child’s test.  I graded this copy.  The second page is the original test.  We went over the test as a class and made any necessary changes.  Students were tested on counting tally marks, counting coins, telling time, addition and subtraction.  The new unit is Visual Patterns, Number Patterns, and Counting.  Also enclosed is an overview of the new unit.  Please take a few minutes to read it over.

Also attached is a copy of your child’s first theme test results.  This test is one of the tools used to assess your child’s comprehension, phonics/decoding and writing skills.  The class average was 77%.  I gave full support on this test.  For each written response I give them a sentence starter and then we discussed going back into the story to find the answers.  At each following test, I’ll give less and less support.  No test will be given without support in first grade.  I’m building the foundation to how to properly answer theme tests questions.  Your child will take theme tests from 1st to 5th grade.  I’ll give three more theme tests by the end of the school year.  We’ll review your child’s first theme test at parent-teacher conferences.

Parent-teacher conferences are on Tuesday, Nov. 24th and Wednesday, Nov. 25th  just before Thanksgiving.  Students will be dismissed early on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m.  Conferences begin at 5 – 8 p.m.  On Wednesday there is no school for students.  Conferences will be held from 8 – 11 a.m.  If you would like to make an appointment, then you may call Mary Bergren at 889-9674.

During parent-teacher conferences and the following week, Mrs. Exo, our librarian is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair in the library.  The books will be for preschool to 8th grade.  This would be a great place to get some good books for Christmas gifts.  The proceeds from the sales will be to buy more books for our school library.  Everyone wins!!

Attached are book orders for November & December.  There are some great items for Christmas.  Please let me know if any of these items are Christmas gifts for your child.  I will notify you when the books are available.  Book orders on or before Friday, November 20th.  Please make your check out to Scholastic.  No cash!  Please don’t order The Penguin Who Wanted to be Different from December book order.  I am ordering this book for each child in my class as part of their gift from me.

Attached is next week’s homework assignment.  I would like to give you ample time to prepare for it.  Please read it over.  If you have any questions, then feel free to contact me.

During the month of November our classroom will collect items for the food pantry.  We will collect until Wednesday, November 18th.  All items collected will be distributed to families in our area.
