Mrs. Niederstadt's Weekly Parent Letter
April 30, 2010

Dear Parents,

We have several new friends in our classroom.  Last Christmas the Bromley family gave us a Live Butterfly Pavilion by Insect Lore.  After spring break I sent away for the containers of larvae.  They arrived last Friday.  Throughout the week we’ve watched the caterpillars grow and change into chrysalides.  Tomorrow I will move them into their butterfly pavilion habitat.  They take seven to ten days to change into Painted Lady butterflies.  Once the butterflies are ready, we’ll release them.  Here are a few fun facts:

  • She can lay up to 500 eggs.

  • She is the most widely distributed butterfly
    in the world.

  • She may travel 1,000 miles in her lifetime.

  • She tastes with her feet.

  • She has 10,000 eyes.

  • She breathes through her abdomen.

There will be no more homework for the remainder of the school year.  Students are tired, but they have worked very hard.  I am very proud of them!!  Currently I have ten students in soccer, three in dance and one in gymnastics.  It appears everyone is busy right now.  I do have one problem: All about Me book.  Unfortunately some students did not get a chance to read it to their families: Sam, John, Kaden, Sara, Jenna, and Kirk.  I will continue to circulate this book.  Sam is taking it home this weekend.  Please read it and return the next school day so all students will have the opportunity to bring it home by the end of the school year.  Thank you!

Enclosed is your child’s number scroll.  Students have worked very hard for the last several months.  Each day we begin math with Big Two and Math Boxes.  Once students have completed them, then they are able to work on their number scrolls.  Most students made it over 1000!  Those students earned a quarter for class store.  Great work to everyone!!  I’ve enclosed their current number scroll sheet and a blank one to continue over the summer months.

Spring pictures are here!  This year Lifetouch is trying something new.  The school will not take any orders or changes to your orders.  You’ll need to contact Lifetouch.  If you did not order spring pictures, then Lifetouch has given you a proof sheet.  On the reverse of the proof sheet, you are able to order pictures directly from them.  If you’ve ordered spring pictures, then they are enclosed in your child’s folder along with a proof sheet.  If you do not like the background, then we were told that you are able to switch, but you’ll need to confirm that with Lifetouch.  If you have more questions, please feel free to contact them at 1-866-955-8342.

Just a friendly reminder about the permission slip & money for Amber Elk Ranch is due on Friday, May 7th.  Students are responsible for a fee of $5.00 to receive a guided tour.  Please send it in an envelope with your child’s name on it.   Parents are welcome to attend.  If you’re interested, then you will need to include your fee of $8.00 in your child’s envelope.  Please label the envelope accordingly.   I would prefer cash, but checks can be made out to Amber Elk Ranch, if necessary.
