Dear First Grade Families,

This week during our shared reading time we learned to read One Red Rooster.  We completed a variety of activities which included making a number word book and writing about our favorite animal in the story.

Some of our math activities this week were making tally marks to fill-in a graph about pets, playing a dice roll game, writing numbers 5 and 6 and filling in a September calendar.

We started a health unit and completed lesson one.  The lesson taught us about germs and we learned ways to stay healthy like washing our hands, coughing into our elbow and eating healthy foods.

Last week you received an orange card in the Friday folder.  If you haven’t already, please fill this out for your child and return it as soon as possible.  I want to plan our first trip to the Onekama library, but the librarian needs all the cards first.  If your child already has a yellow library card please bring it to me.

I still need volunteers for my guided reading time.  As a volunteer you would monitor students doing literacy stations while I conduct guided reading groups.  I would need you to come in by 8:00/8:30 and stay until 9:30.  You would be assigned 1 day per week.  If you are not available at this time, but would like to volunteer at another time please let me know.  Parents are always welcome in our room.

I would like to remind you that your child is welcome to bring in a water bottle for water as long as it is one that won’t easily spill.  They can keep it at their desk throughout the week and then I will ask them to take it home on Friday to be washed over the weekend and brought back Monday.

I also want to remind you again that we have a snack time scheduled each day at 1:45.  Please be sure your child has a healthy snack to eat at that time.  Some good snacks to provide them with are fruit, yogurt, cheese and crackers, granola bars, etc.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)       Can you make 5 tally marks?  Can you make 8 tally marks?  How about 10?

2)      Can you use the following words in a sentence? And, cat, dog, fast, one, three, two, went

3)       Can you tell me one thing you can do to stay healthy?

 Have a good weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
