Dear First Grade Families,
It has been a great week and I
have enjoyed getting to know your children. We worked together to
establish six rules for our classroom. They are 1) raise your hand, 2)
be respectful (hands and feet to ourselves), 3) use kind words, 4)
follow directions, 5) use good manners and 6) do your best work. We
continue to learn and practice valuable routines and procedures so we
can establish a good learning community. Our unit on rules included
learning 3 positive ways to deal with a bully. Those three ways include
telling an adult, walking away, or using kind words to ask the bully to
stop what they are doing. Our unit ended by discussing responsibility
and all the students were assigned a special job to help clean up the
room at the end of our day.
We have a snack time in the
afternoon at 1:45. Please make sure your child has a healthy snack to
help them get through the afternoon. I also allow water bottles to be
brought in and kept here for the week. Please be sure it is one that
can be closed and not easily spilled when not in use. The water bottles
can stay throughout the week and then I will ask the children to take
them home for the weekend to be washed.
During the rest of the month I
will be testing students in order to place them in an appropriate guided
reading group. My goal is to begin guided reading in October. I need
parent volunteers to come it at this time. If you are available from
8-9:30 any day of the week please let me know. I will also post a
sign-up sheet at Open House next week Tuesday Sept. 15th. If
you are available at another time of the day and would like to come in
you are welcome just let me know and I’ll schedule you. It is always
great to have extra help!

I have enclosed the enrichment
schedule. Please view this schedule so you know what days your child
participates in special classes.
I would like to thank those of
you who returned the My Child as a Learner survey, the permission slips,
and the holiday party volunteer sign-up. If you still have these at
home please fill them out and return them as soon as possible.
I have included a letter that
explains what we will be learning in math during the first unit. Please
read the letter and keep it as a reference so you can talk to your child
about math and practice the concepts they are learning.
Homework will begin in October.
I will send home expectations for homework at that time. Your child
will need a two-pocket folder so you can get that now so you have it
when they need it in October.
As I mentioned in my letter on
Tuesday, I want us to work together to enrich your child’s experience so
any support you can provide for them at home is very appreciated. We
have a classroom webpage. I will post my newsletters and pictures of
special fieldtrips and activities so check it out!
Have a good weekend!!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
