Parent Letter

 Dear First Grade Families,

This week during shared reading time we learned to read the story When this box is full by Patricia Lillie.  We made a four seasons flip book, completed a making words lesson, added words to our word wall and made a fall book to take home and read to you.

In math this week we learned to play rolling for 50, we learned some important phone numbers, we practiced writing numbers 7 and 8, and we started doing math boxes in our math journals. Your child needs to master counting this year.  Please practice counting at home.  Your child needs to count by 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and backwards form 30. Please teach your child your phone number and address too.  We talked about why it is important for them to know this information.

We started a science unit on the properties of matter this week. We learned the properties of matter, types of matter, completed a sink/float experiment, and discussed the different properties of water.

Picture order forms came home to you on Friday.  Our picture day is next Tuesday, Oct. 13th.  If you want to order pictures please be sure you return the order form with a check on Tues.

Tuesday, Oct. 6th, we had a secretary from the Attorney Generals office in Lansing come and talk to the kids about Internet safety.  There is more information in the Friday folder.  Nothing has to come back to school. It is all for you and your child so your child understands the importance of being safe while on the Internet.

Monday was our first trip to the public library. If your child was unable to check out books it is because I did not receive an orange card back.  If you need another card let me know.  Our next visit will be Oct. 26th.  Miss Jane will have some October crafts for your child to make. Please make sure your child’s books are returned by the 26th so they can have new books. You can return your child’s books directly to the library or bring them to school and I will be happy to return them for you.

I will begin assigning homework on Mon.  Please be sure your child brings a 2-pocket folder for their homework.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

            1)  Can you use the following words in a sentence? Is, not, for, will

            2)  Can you count backwards from 30?

            3)  Can you tell me a property of your bed? A property of your favorite toy?

 Have a good weekend!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
