Dear First
Grade Families,
This week during our shared reading time we completed our third and
final theme test. Please look over the tests. Be sure you are practicing
the following reading strategies with your child: 1) looking at the
picture, 2) sounding out the word, 3) looking for known chunks in the
word like –in and –at, 4) go on and read the end of the sentence and
then go back to the unknown word to try and figure out what would make
sense.
Be sure your child can tell you
about the books they read.
In
math this week we completed the mid-year assessment. Please go over the
test with your child and practice the concepts they have not yet
mastered. Many students are having difficulty counting money. Please
allow them to count any spare change you have at home so this becomes
easier for them. I have included the Unit 6 letter. Please read the
information provided about the unit and keep it as a reference while
your student learns and practices each new math concept. Math flashcards
have come home. Please practice these with your child. As your child
shows mastery of the facts at school they will receive new facts to
learn. |
One
of our reading month activities is a book/magazine exchange. If your
child has any books/magazines they would like to donate for the exchange
please bring them in by March 15th. If they bring any in they
will get coupons and then on March 19th they can use their
coupons to get new-used books/magazines. March 24th is Young
Author’s Night here in the Media Center from 6-7 pm. This is a special
opportunity for your child to read their animal research book to a small
group. On March 26th we will be having a pajama day and we
are dedicating most of the day to reading. Your child can bring their
favorite books, a favorite stuffed animal, and their pillow. We will do
a variety of reading activities throughout the day.
Enjoy the sunshine!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Lyman
