Dear First Grade Families,

I would like to welcome two new students to our classroom.  Ajah and Kelton have joined us.  They are twins.  They are fitting in very well and we are enjoying getting to know them.

We only had shared reading on Monday this week.  We read The Lady with the Alligator purse by Nadine Bernard Westcott and completed a story map.  On Tuesday we completed a making words lesson.  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday we took a 90 word spelling test.  Out of the 90 words, any word your child misspelled will become a spelling word.  Your child will receive 6 words a week to study and be tested on at the end of the week.  In the spring we will take the same 90 word test to determine each child’s growth in spelling.  Your child will receive their first set of spelling words on Monday.  Their first test will be Thursday, Jan. 14th.  If they get all 6 correct I will award them with a pack of smarties!!

On Wednesday this week we completed the unit three progress check in math.  The kids had a very difficult time with this test.  I am choosing not to grade the tests.  Instead, we completed the test together as a class.  The test that we did together came home today.  Please look it over and try to practice the concepts with your child.  The unit 4 letter came home today also.  Please look it over and keep it as a reference.

Next week we will be completing our second theme test.  Theme tests determine your child’s growth in reading comprehension, reading fluency, phonics, and writing.  Please make sure your child eats a good breakfast and gets a good night’s sleep so they can think clearly and do their best.

We started a social studies unit about economics this week.  We will continue learning about economics for another week or so.

Onekama Public Library books are due.  Please be sure you turn them in so you don’t receive a fine.  Miss Jane has renewed about 8 books, but she cannot renew them anymore.  You can bring them directly to the library or bring them to school and I will return them. We are going to wait until the snow clears before we walk to the library again.  The sidewalks were not clear last time and I do not feel comfortable walking in the street.

It is time to treat your child to a personal pizza!  Be sure to praise them on all the reading they do at school.  Coupons are attached.

Some students are complaining about wet, cold hands after recess.  I’ve tried explaining to some that if their gloves are not waterproof they should limit the amount of snow they handle.  I would suggest bringing a couple pairs of gloves because sometimes their gloves are still wet once it is time for another recess.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      How much is a dime worth? A nickel? A penny?

2)      Can you give me an example of a good?  A service?

Have a great weekend!

 Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
