Dear First Grade Families,

During our shared reading time this week we learned to read The Little Red Hen by Byron Barton.  We completed a story map, completed a how-to writing using the words first, next and last, and we added new words to our word wall.

In math this week we started our number scrolls.  These will hang in the hall and we will see how high we can write our numbers.  We also learned about fact power and practiced addition facts.

Theme tests have been graded and came home today.  Please look them over and continue to practice the concepts from the test.  Be sure your child is practicing the reading strategies (looking at the picture, sounding it out, looking for familiar parts of the word, reading on and then going back to the unknown word) when they come to an unknown word.

Report cards have been mailed so be looking for those to arrive within the next couple of days.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about your child’s report card.  Be sure you are practicing any of the concepts that were marked with a S- or a U.  In addition to the reading, writing and math targets that were taught this semester I also taught a social studies unit on economics and a science unit about solid earth (landforms)  You will see those marked as such on the report card.

Our Valentine’s Day party will be the afternoon of Thursday, February 11th.  I have provided a class list for your child to use when addressing their cards.  Zachary will be bringing us cups, Jade is bringing a drink and Mrs. VanVoorst wil be here to help.  We need healthy snacks to eat so if you are willing to donate anything please let me know.

January Book-It coupons have come home to you today.  Be sure to praise your reader for the hard work they put in each month as they become more fluent in reading.

Have a good weekend!  Try to stay warm!

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)      Can you name 3 landforms?

2)    Can you count to 500 by 100’s

Sincerely,

Mrs Lyman
