Dear First Grade Families,

We worked really hard on our theme test this week.  I will work on grading them next week and will try to send them home next week Thursday.  On Friday we do not have school.  Teachers have an in-service to attend.  We have another in-service on Monday so students do not have school.

Good Behavior Ski Day information and forms went home last Friday.  Please fill them out and return them as soon as possible.  We go to Crystal Mountain on Tuesday, February 9th.

Spelling homework went okay this week.  I will give just spelling homework again next week, but then I will be going back to the original homework schedule with spelling words as an extra activity.  As I mentioned last week your child will receive six spelling words to study each week.  They take their test on Thursday’s.  If they get all six words correct I will give them a pack of Smarties.

Math this week was all about measuring. We practiced measuring with a 12 inch ruler, a six inch ruler, and a tape measure.

We completed our economics unit.  Throughout the unit we read stories to learn about goods, services, producers, consumers, scarcity, and trade.

We started a health unit about nutrition and physical activity.  So far we have learned about the food pyramid and what types of food are from each category.  We learned about healthy foods that we should eat everyday and about sugary foods that we should only eat in moderation.

On Friday we had physical therapists visit our school and they set up an obstacle course in the gym.  We practiced our balance, strength, and coordination.

Book orders came home today.  Please look them over and if your child would like some books please fill-out the order form and send it with a check by next week Thursday.

Questions to ask your child this week are the following:

1)       What is a producer?

2)      What is a consumer?

3)       Can you give me an example of a fruit? A vegetable? A dairy food? A grain? A meat?

Enjoy the weekend!  Hopefully we will get to warm up a bit!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Lyman
